That is the only way that I know of. If your intake side has 2 and your exhaust has 1, you have a manual B16A. If each side has 1 valve spring, than it is an auto.
well, if it's a 12 valve, it's definitely NOT a B16......... but, if the engine came with a flywheel bolted to the end, it's a manual. if it had a flexplate (looks like a flywheel, but much thinner) it's from an auto. also, by the intake manifold. on the manifold there will be a vacuum actuator bolted in the middle if it was from an auto. if it was from a manual, the plate is machined flat (no holes tapped yet). whoever told you the 12 valve vs. 16 valve thing is an idiot, and I would suggest never taking advice from them.

edit- okay, i guess i missed what you meant by 1 valve spring vs. 2, but my B16A was from an auto, and the inside of the head looked very similar to my B18C. got any pictures of what you are talking about? BTW, my intake manifold thing is right.

do u have any pic of that intake thing as i dont understand.
well with my fly wheel i dont know as i already got it put in and i was trying to see if it was an auto or manual.

ok. heres my rough sketch from what i can remember. i only saw this thing for a day, so bear with me..... it looks like a small secondary butterfly actuator, but it's on the center of the intake manifold, and connects to the throttle pulley if i remember correctly. it almost looks like the thing that lets the throttle out slowly, but its bigger and next to it. i hope this helps.
