tensioner bolt
hey guys i'm replacing my timing belt and i need to loosen the tensioner bolt to slip the belt on. the problem is i can't get it off. its only supposed to be torqued at 33 ft lbs but it wont budge. i tried to use a breaker bar and i get nothing. i have already broken a socket wrench trying

They are long bolts so they tend to be hard coming off. I have a special long box end wrench from Snap-On to get em off. the trick is to push really hard really fast so the bolt doesnt have a chance to strip. If you lean on it slowly or "bounce" it it will strip and your life will suck. once it strips you may as well order a new one and a tensioner and bust out the die grinder.

oh man it was fucked up. i had to choose to pull the motor out and grind it off (b16 in a 88 hatch, no room to work in the engine bay) or try to grind it off with it in the engine bay. well the only way i could do it was to keep cutting into the head with a dremel till there wasnt any head left. took like 2-3 hours of cutting till the head was gone then the actual bolt i ended up being able to unscrew it with my fingers. turns out the spring(s) that actually tension the pully are what make/keep the bolt tight. when the head was off and pull came off it was suuuuuper loose. so maybe a trick would be to try and pry the pully with a bar loosening the tension on the timingbelt, and that might actually make the bolt easy to remove.

The bolt holds the tensioner in place. The spring only tensions the belt long enough to tighten the bolt. Think about it, once you cut the head of the bolt off there was nothing pulling on the threads of the bolt anymore, thats why it got loose.
