Default Reducing weight in EK...

Has anyone removed the thick metal plates underneath the rear seat? Do these serve as a structural support, or could they safely be removed from the car? They look pretty heavy...

There was a thread on this I believe. Something about if you remove them you lose the ability to LIVE in certain types of crashes. They have something to do with the safety, I THINK.

From what I've read, those were added on the 99-00 EK's for safety. I don't know if these means that the 96-98's were unsafe or that they are just extra on the 99-00's. As far as removing them, I wouldn't unless they were being replaced by a roll cage.

There on my 97 hatch...and I would really think twice about removing them because they look as though they prevent the car from crumpling too much under a hard side impact.

Yea, my '00 si had it. I thought about taking it out then i thought it might be some sort of safety thing. A guy long time ago told me he took his out, it weighed 50lbs or something. Thats what he said. Thats also how i got the idea.

I'd leave it in.
