Formula One Special - Tonight
Just a heads up guys.
Formula one "Decade" is gonna be one at 9:00PM Eastern time on SpeedTV. It's basically gonna be highlights of the 1993 South African GP with a young and up-coming Michael S. going head to head with the late great Sienna(sp?) and Prost. It will be cool to see the progress that F1 has made over the past 10 years; and the fact that I was only 12 when the race took place...
Oh, and this is gonna be the debut of the "Decade" series, I think.

Definately the most beautiful F1 cars with the noses on the ground, big intakes and huge rear rubber...oh yeah and you could see the drivers hands too back then

I'm watching now.
I'm in awe to see all the old names again like Capelli, Lehto, Comas, Wendlinger, Herbert, and Alesi to name a few. Too bad it's the '93 season and the new rules in which there were no more turbos.
The cars have definitely changed alot, most notably the size. They are so much shorter in length than the F1 cars today.

Yep, one season and he was history. I heard he got paid a crapload of money to do nothing!

And yes, Andretti couldnt "cut" it, fears arise with the IRL champ Cristiano da Matta, who seems to be following the path of Michael...

Haha! Oh well, I learn something new everyday. But yea, that 3 way battle was tiiite. Too bad it was only an hour worth of highlights though. I've been rooting for DaMatta ever since the start of the season, but it's not looking to good as stated above

Don't know why but I thought this was gonna be kinda a documentary on the 93 South African GP rather than a race recap. Still very enjoyable though
while i do agree that michael did not live up to expectations i do think everyone was overly harsh on him.
it was his first time in F1 so he had no experience to go on which at the time (active suspension and all the other electronic gizmos) would have really helped. there was some sort of testing restriction that year so he got to do very little testing. in a few of the tests the did do he was very very close to senna. the POS ford engine they had came to them at the last minute so what little pre-season testing they did get was not represntative of what the were running with during the seaon. the team was completely senna centric (as much as would be allowed by ron dennise) etc, etc.
these are not excuses for andretti's race performance and i totally agree that a true champion rises above everthing to shine and this is why i don't regard andretti as anything better than a good race car driver.
i do get sick of everyone just looking at his finishing positions in the 13 races he competed in and not considering what else was going on with mclaren and F1 at the time.

Well, Andretti also refused to move to Europe and flew back to PA after each race, so that really didn't help him in testing. The other issue is "The Gidget with a Gold Card!" His wife got chewed down by the press and Sport Illustrated article how she took advantage of his status and screwed up his career in F1.

Mika was good. I believe he outqualified Senna in his first race (Phoenix).
I definitely enyojed his battles with Michael Schumacher in the late 90s. He was the one guy who could take it to MS, and beat him head to head on many occasions.
Anyone remember than memorable pass at Spa in 2000?

exactly. perfect example of a champion vs. just another great driver.
also remember that mika had much more f1 experience than andretti and was familiar with that year's mclaren through his role as the team's test driver.
