Default best affordable set up for a ef civic

When the lease on my truck runs out i am going to need to buy a new car. I have been wanting a ef for a couple years now so I am planning on getting one. This car is going to be used as my daily driver. What I want overall is something dependable but real fun to drive. I was thinking about just buying one with a b16 swap but I live in San Diego so getting it to pass smog would be a lot of trouble. What would you guys recommend me getting instead of one with a JDM engine. I was thinking maybe an SI might be a good option, or one with a mini me swap. Please let me know what you suggest.

If you don't want to go JDM and your on a tight budget then the D16Z6 which has VTEC but the only downfall is that it's a SOHC. It's got around 125HP @ 106 LBS of torque which is a bit better than stock and you've got VTEC. If you have a bit of cash to spend then I would definetly go for the B18C or even a B17 GSR motor with the YS1 tranny. It would be very helpful if you post up a price range. This is assuming you buy a stock 4th gen and you swap out the motor. But I have seen a couple forth gens here in Toronto with a B18C swap go for around 8-9k cdn.
Also you can try picking up a civic with a usdm b16 which is from the 99-00 sir's.

stock d16a6's are fun to drive too...just get an aftermarket head for the bottom d16 and swap the stock head back in when you need to smog. i wanted to do that, but ended up going b16. now i have till the end of june to smog my car...lolz, oh well, b16's are fun too. also check out b18a's, you can get them ref'ed alot easier than b16's, plus you don't have to convert to obd1 or obd2

So if I went with a B18a how much of a hassle would it be to pass smog? Also does anyone know of any sites that have info on what the swap consists of? Thanks for the fast replies

is a good site, look at the resources at the bottom too, especially hasport's site.
http://www.hondaswap.com/swap/index.php might have some good info too, but you have to register, something I don't want to do.
Also, in the May 2003 issue of Sport Compact Car, there is a write-up on a b18a into a dpi civic/crx. I thought it seemed pretty good and didn't assume you knew a lot, unlike some internet write-ups.

I hope you find some helpful stuff!

d16y8

then piece by piece build it and get it ready for a sohc turbo. they are relatively cheap and faster than any b16. building the engine would be first. low comp forged pistons, turbo cam, forged rods. then get an hf maniflod (wich u can bolt a turbo on) and buy piece by piece. small turbo, BOV, small intercooler, etc. you can have upwards of 210whp on about 10-12 lbs boost, for a safe daily driver. then when u go to the track u can run more boost and have a reak quick ef.

d16y8--cheap
y8 build--cheap
homemade tubo--cheap

overall great motor, fast car, you will love it. plus while u are gaining funds the build and turbo u can have fun on the stock d16y8, it actualy is a pretty quick motor.

why don't you california guys try to title your car out of state, (preferably in a county that doesn't have emissions at all?)

I was actually thinking about doing that because I have family in North Carolina "really weak smog laws". But I am not sure if I could even get away with it being as I am a legal resident of CA. Another thing would be every time the car needed to be inspected I would have to drive 3000 miles. Honestly I would rather do it legally over here and save my self the trouble even if it costs a little more.
