my stick VS tig welding
I have about 30 minutes of welding experience. I turned the welder all the way up in stick mode to blow a hold in the metal and placed the bolt in there. Then I used different power levels to see how to best lay a bead. I then tried the tig torch, and that made a real fine arc that didn't go through the metal as you can see the two pipep joined.
practice laying your stick welds on something else other than what matters ;-)
also watching someone helps big time. in about 2 hrs practice time with my brother, i was laying horizontal welds pretty much identical to his, and he's a cert. welder (many different styles etc.) all except for vertical and overhead of course. heh.
Practice makes perfect. what kind of rod, and what size are you trying to weld with?

I dont know what size rod, I bought the welder used and it came with some stuff. The rods have a white dot on the end of them and looked 1/16 inch. The tig welding I didn't use any filler, I just melted it together. I think when I make the downpipe, I'll have more practice tigging and get a nice roll of dimes.

were you using sheilding gas cause ive gotten better welds with a flux core welder haha, take some time it will get better and do some reading on it then go out and practice

LMFAO
Looks liek my 1st year in Metal Shop class long ago. Takes a while to lay down some good beads but hey u learn as u go right. Just as long as it wont leak and works good, then your good to go.
Did u use an ARC or TIG welder.

I used the arc on the o2 bung, and the tig on the seam connecting the two 2 1/4 pipe.
I might be imagining things, but I think my wideband reads about .2 leaner since I had to use a bolt insted of a bung. I think I'm going to cut it off next week and weld in a real bung, I'm going to tig it this time.
I'll probably drop a pound off my car too.

LOL
More like 2 lbs off. Practice on a piece of square metal or something laying beads on top of eachother. Thats how i leanred to lay down Prefect beads. The Tig welder is a bit hard for me for some reason. On the ARC welder, i was pretty good. Post some pics when u try it again.
