I just put a 95 d16z6 into my 89 ef, replacing the d15b2 motor. I bought the motor, tranny, mounts, axles, and ecu off someone. I used blown90hatch's ecu conversion harness. I had everthing wired up except vtec. The motor sounded fine and everthing seemed to be working right except for a ticking which got faster as the revs went up. I drove the car a good 20 miles and was pulling out of a gas station; in first gear at around 3-4 k there was a loud thunk noise and the engine cut out and wouldn't start again. The starter sounds fine, the engine just won't start. There are no leaks and no damage I can see. Any ideas on what could have happened? Did the guys sell me a crappy motor? Any help is much appreciated.

 

It was just a clunk? No banging or knocking or anything? Pull the pan, maybe something did break and you just can't see it. Is there metal onthe dipstick? All your connections good?

 

Sounds like you threw a rod or had a valve problem...

 

Sound like you may have spun a bearing. Check you oil for metal flakes.

 

Sounds like the ticking might have been messed up timing, perhaps the thunk was pistons smashing into valves.

should check your spark plugs an timing the tapping could be becuse of the spark plugs anmight also be why the car won't start up

 

no metal on dipstick, haven't had time to really look into it. thanks for your responses, I'll let you know how it turns out.
