Hmmm,

I took the whole PS assembly out and just got my car back after 1.5 years... Long story.

Anyway, before that I ran with no PS belt.

I made 3 HP and 1 TQ across the board and I much prefer the FEEL with no PS. There is much more feedback.

If you have trouble turning the wheel, work out Honestly, I'm not a big guy but I have no issues, except parallell parking, lol.

The keys are:

Run a little extra tire pressure.
Don't try to turn the wheel with the car at a dead stop, roll, even a little, and it's MUCH easier.

I'm now thinking about a manual rack though, since it would save even more weight. The Civic racks can supposedly fit, but the ratio is very slow.

There was a guy on the hyrbrid page awhile back selling quick ratio manual racks. If there is enough interest, someone will make them!

Deep in my Heart I hope you are joking. I have all of my power steering component's removed and would not ever go back to power. The feel the feedback and the weight saving's make me wonder why they put it on the Type-R.

i don't think that its really hard to drive without power steering. i don't have it my cx and gsr. the only time its hard to drive is when your trying to make three point turns......

um....NO

I meant, can you take off the whole steering assembly. Not just the freekin belt. Like change steering ratios by swapping out with a Civic or something??

removing the whole PS system will mess things up since the system must be lubricated!

okay..I guess you foos are just retarded.

I meant, take out the power steering assembly AND the steering rack to some other Honda MANUAL steering rack. This would mean that the PS is no longer needed.

Has anyone done this?

Swapping racks is definately possible, but as someone mentioned, the most common swap is a manual Civic rack which has a much slower ratio. In my opinion, you would be just as happy removing the power steering components and leaving your power rack in place. Much less work and you retain the quicker ratio. Removing my PS saved 16 lbs. I made a fluid recirc. system to keep everything lubricated. It's one of my favorite mods so far, and all it cost me was some time and about $10 to make the recirc. system. But to answer your original question, yes you can buy a non-power Civic rack for a reasonable price and swap it in. Just be prepared for a considerably slower steering ratio.

thanks

Much of the credit for this idea goes to Jeff652 who posted lots of pics and explainations of his system. Mine is a little different. Keep in mind mine is not a perfect setup, but it looks very stock and works nicely. Ideally, I'd like to run the same recirc. system as the Realtime cars, but I haven't been able to find much info on this so far. When I do, thats what I'll be using. But for now, here's my system:
First I removed all power steering components. What you're left with is the rack with one nipple where the low-pressure hose used to attach and a threaded opening where the metal hard-line used to attach. I went to the hardware store and found a threaded fitting that would fit this opening and accept a hose on the other end. Basically this left me with 2 nipples to attach the new hoses to. (Some people choose to cut the hard-line and attach the new rubber hose to that, but I didn't want to destroy the line) I used tubing and a T fitting to connect the two nipples, leaving the T in the middle. A third hose from this T runs up to the reservoir. The reservoir I'm currently using is a Honda clutch fluid reservoir I got in a junkyard for $3. Filled it up with fluid, checked for leaks, and that was it. I don't know how to post pics, but I can email some to anyone whos interested. Jeff had some nice pics of his in a previous post, and much of it is the same as mine. Just search for "power steering" and its the "Power steering removal - easy method" post.

Hey,

Does anyone remember the details on the custom racks the guy was selling on the Hybrid board several months ago?

I think they were spendy, but provided a very good ratio and were a true manual rack. I'm either gonna stay with my PS rack with no PS, or get an aftermarket manual rack. I don't want a slow ratio manual rack...

Unfortunately, I won't be doing anything anytime soon since I just dished out a grip to get GG back and I'm getting married soon, hehe.

Thanks,

I know this is an old post but the best thing to do is swap to an EG rack which I believe is 3.6 turns LTL--I think the Integra power rack is 3.0? Take the manual EG rack and get the Quaife kit for it--it replaces the actual rack and pininon inside the housing--it will give you 3.25 turns LTL. For some reason the EF kit is 2.8 turns LTL--and apparently its one of the best mods you can do...Also, I think its always best to use an actual manual rack as opposed to a power rack that has been converted to manual--I had a converted power rack and the manual rack feels much better and more natural.

Thanks, it's certainly a very old post. Since then, I was able to learn more about the Realtime and similar setups, and assemble a more comprehensive loop with proper metric fittings for the rack, a more suitable reservoir/breather, and better overall components.

holy old post Batman!!! hahah when I was reading Padawan's old post up there he was like "I don't know how to post pics" and I was thinking wtf, this dude is OG is he joking??

Yeah I don't think you want a manual rack. You don't want to run just without the PS pump belt either, because you're still pushing fluid and pressure around and the steering will feel very heavy (tried it myself once). The ideal system as Padawan has posted is a setup that keeps the system lubricated and allows any pressure build-up to vent out. I haven't done it myself but many people report that driving effort is only minimally increased over the stock PS setup, and feedback is greatly increased.

I surely do not believe there would be anything unsafe about it. If anyone blamed a crash on PS removal, I would blame it on driver error myself, either while driving, or doing something wrong when removing the PS system.
