OT: Reasonable asking price for my R
After I get home in a few months from the beautiful desert, accumulating 9 months of Hostile fire pay as well as a tax free reenlistment bonus, its time for a new car.
I've owned #396 the whole way through.
Its got 38k on it.
Aside from the minor scratches, a few dings, worn shifter **** and a butt mark of 200lbs sitting in and out of the seats its a pretty clean car.
Oil changed every 3500 miles with Mobil 1, Bridgestone RE730's at 22,000 miles. Just did a Mike K tune up package special 1 year ago. Plugs, cap, rotor, PCV valve, and fuel filter.
Modifications include short throw shifter and clear corners (still have original stuff)
Car will include Helms manual, Factory Bra, and some snappy black steel rims with studded Nokkian 195/60/15's.
Judging by what most are going for now $15,500 doesnt seem out of the ordinary.
I know this is off topic
but I'm just curious as to what I should start the price wars at.

that sounds like a pretty damn good deal. whats the "book value" list for it? I would guess that is under book value and I would probably ask a little more.
I've seen between 15,500- 18,000 for 98's with 50k or less on them.
The only problem you will run into when trying to sell is the loan value on a 98 ITR is roughly 12,800 depending on the buyers credit. So, the potential buyer will need to come up with the difference out of their own pocket.
I would love to find a 97-98 in the next few months, if I can sell the 4 Runner I have now. Sounds like you have a pretty nice car, and the miles are extremely low!
G'luck!

And I thought I was indecisive!

If you go through Honda Finance (or whatever they're called now), you've got a better chance. They understand the deal with the R and are a bit more flexible when compared to other banks.
Hope it helps.

LOL, well.. I decided to give up on the "track days", but after the beaver and pops allowing me to drive his "R" car all weekend long, I really want another one.. I kick myself now for selling my 00. I would only have about 7k left on the loan at this point...

that's what I worry about... having some R-selling thoughts lately.
to the original poster: 15,500 sounds really good, but like someone said, it would be difficult for someone to get that loan amount - maybe 11-12, maybe a little more if you can convince the loan-officer of it's value.

$15,500 should move it quick. At least I would think. I got my 97' in September with 37,000 miles for $15,000 and I thought it was a steal.
Good price IMO

Well I paid 24,700 new. It has no A/C (sorry for leaving that out) I just don't miss it if it never came with the car.
I paid it off in 2000 (wifes reenlistment bonus
)
I realize that the people most interested in buying the car probably are a little young for the bank to cough up the necessary dough, especially when you throw a 18k pricetag at them. The wife wants to list it at 16k and do the "talk down deal" thing but I tend to like to cut through the bullshit.

You should start higher than that. YOu want to have a little room to negotiate with. I would put it up for like 17 or 18 OBO and see what bites you can get. That is a rare car with low miles, in good condition. No reason to sell yourself short...
Where are you located? I think your price sounds too low. There are very few type R's left, and a one-owner no accident car with a fully documented service history will command top dollar, even if it is cosmetically imperfect. I sold my '00 with 18k miles for $20,250 and others are going for even more, depending on location. I am in MI where nobody has heard of the type R, and my buyer came all the way from Wisconsin. If you're looking for an instant sale, your price sounds fine, but if you're willing to wait for the right buyer who will appreciate the car's documented history, I'd hold out for a bit more.
On an aside, thanks for your service. Whatever I may think of our president and his decisions, there is no doubt that we wouldn't be the country we are today without the bravery of people like you and your wife.

Thanks for the kind words. Its nice to hear. As far as the President is concerned...it could have been Gore
we'd be in some big trouble right about now. Nuf' said on that.
I know that I could probably sell it for more but to tell you the truth its not worth the hastle to me. I'm not some shifty used car salesman trying to talk someone out of baby formula money. I sold my wifes old 99SH to a guy on base (a cop of all people) and he is still friendly to me so I guess I did OK there
The car is in NM, safely tucked away in a garage on an Airbase waiting for me to switch out the snow tires, blow off the dust, swap out the oil and run it up to VTEC a few last times before handing it over to someone who will most likely get more use out of it than me. I am not even remotely near a track and honestly I don't have the time now-a-days to devote to learning how to drive it better.
As far as documentation, I did all of the work myself. I guess my biggest documentation would be the parts guy at Bender Honda, I am there every few months getting oil filters, drain plug gaskets and assorted fluids. I refuse to pay someone else to do easy work like tuning up a car (except changing the oil on my wifes old 99SH, that car had the worst place for a damn filter). Hell, if I could get my hands on an alignment rack and good tire machine I'd would do that stuff as well.
I got all the tune up parts from Mike K. He was a pretty cool guy that used post on here that hooked us up on package deals. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=97482
