well, shorter gears would be more fun but longer gears would get better gas mileage...but, its a honda. so who cares all that much.

Shorter gears means you accelerate faster, however too short and your gears don't have much top speed. This means you could end up in something like 50mph doing 4k when you upshift to 5th. If you don't care about mileage or the sound you'll be making on the highway this is one of the ways to improve the power of your car.

Longer gears of course allow you to stay in the gears longer. This has the advantage of allowing you to stay in your torque mutliple longer, thus allowing your car to have higher top speed, in theory. This also allows you to get great mileage since your car barely has to do any work at higher speeds.

So it sounds like longer gears would be a better choice, right? Not really, if your gears are to long for your engine, it won't be able to push the gear.

So the better choice is to find the happy medium, gears nice enough to offer good acceleration that drops you near your powerband when you upshift, aren't long enough to be outside the power of the engine but still offer a good top speed.

It depends if your going all motor then shorter gears are better (s1,y1 etc) if your going turbo or sc it is better to have longer gears like and ls tranny

you morons, (no offense) short gears are your friend, and about all that bullshit about staying in your torque multiple longer, come on now. short gears mean you accelerate faster, true but guess what it's a honda it's made to get good gas mileage, i get 28 mpg on the highway, (4200rpms) get yourself a j1/s1 tranny they are out of the integra xsi (this will also come with the appropriate intermediate shaft for the use of 90-93 integra axles) the y1 tranny is dumb to get, it will just make you slower period. and the LS tranny would be totally stupid to get because it is long as ****, and if you put it on a b16 holy crap, say goodbye to being fast. Ok, that's all from me, if you guys don't agree with me. go post this crap in the FI forum. peace.

recap: get a jdm j1/s1, it will make you fast and still get good gas mileage
ls tranny blows my anus, and the y1 tranny would just be dumb.

Short gears are good, they are the next best thing for going faster besides pumping up your engine. Way too short and your going to run out of room quick. Imagine having gears so short you have to cruise the highway doing 7000 in 5th at 85mph. Even 7000rpm is to hard on a honda engine. This is an extreme case such as a customized tranmission, the stock transmissions offfered for our hondas would never really put you that high.

He's right though, stick with the shortest gearing transmission you can get, otherwise whats the point in engine swapping.
