when i changed my oil i slightly over filled and my car is smoking bad, whats a good oil to run?
i used valvoline 20-50 and slightly over filled it, i was smoking realy bad till i drained a half quart. it still smokes a little, could it be the type of oil? and whats a good oil for a 100k mile crx si motor?
Most likely because there was so much oil that it kept getting slung up and getting past the rings and causeing the smoke.
Thats way thick. Pop your hood and the sticker will say 5w-30. Personally though I run Q.State High Mileage 10-w30. It's good stuff.

20-50 is like mac truck OIL!!!
Use a good synthetic 5w-30 That is what it is supposed to run. Then never over fill it. Put in a just what you think it should be. Then start the car. Let it run for 5 min. Stop the car. let it sit for 15 min. Durring that 15 min make sure that there are no leaks. Then check the oil. As long as its in the ok range leave it.

thanx guys, i just changed it again with 5-30 and it's not smoking near as much, i think the rest of the mack truck oil will burn off and it should quit smoking altogether

The thicker oil wouldn't cause it to smoke more, or atleast it shouldn't. It sounds like that's obviously where he overfilled it. Thicker oil would burn and/or leak slower.
I agree with these guys about using the recommended 5w-30, if the motors in good condition that is. If it leaks/smokes, I'd go with the Higher Mileage oil like he said, that's actually pretty good stuff.

over filling causes smoke not the type of oil, if anything the 20-50 will smoke less
5-30 is very thin, for higher miles 10-30 is better, high mileage oil is best
if you have no leaks then go for 5-30 but at that mileage your probably going to have minor leaks
5-30 synthetic will probably leak like crazy
and 15-40 is for mack trucks
3.5 qts fills all SOHC civics 88- (granted your changing the filter too)

Overfilling a little bit isn't going to hurt. The only thing that can happen, is the crank whips through the oil, creating a sort of foam (which can screw up the oil lubrication).
from all my experiences with oil burning, 20-50 burns the slowest - but yet it smokes the worse... 5w-30 burns like faster than gas, very little smoke (only at WOT), 10w-30/40 is all basically the same - it burns pretty quickly and smokes a little more than 5w-30
here is what i came up with, it's not perfect because my car is on highway and city at different times - all of this is discount auto parts brand oil
5w-30
100 miles, ~1 1/4 quart, just below the first dot
10w-30
100 miles, ~1 quart
10w-40
Same as 30
20w-50
100 miles, ~1/2 quart
this is pretty much estimates that I came up with from my trials with every type of oil possible... and don't use that stop oil burn stuff, learned the hardway of spending $5 to only find out it smokes more and doesn't work at all!
to sum it up, the heavier weights smoked much more and I felt a performance loss in my slow automatic DX... IMO you should run the 10w-30, it will smoke very rarely unless you floor it and shouldn't feel any performance loss
and about the overfilling part, it probably leaked into ur exhaust and caused even more smoke... u should drain some out if you overflow it, too much is bad
