Default b16 or type R Head

I want a head to port and polish. Does it make a difference which head I use? I heard they are almost identical heads (similiar flow). Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If you're looking at a complete R head...

Differences and what they're worth:

ITR cams - $350 (used)
ITR LMA's - $250 (new); hard to find used and you probably wouldn't want them used anyways for fear of getting a P72 LMA or a shoddy set.
ITR valvesprings - $110 (used); even if you're not going to use them, you can sell them
ITR intake valves - $135 + recutting the seats (negligible labor cost if you're having the valve job done anyways...just ask them to recut the seats for the ITR valves)

You can figure the price difference and whether it's worth it to you. I have no idea what the two heads go for these days.

If you're only considering bare heads, just get the B16 PR-3 head.

Why do you have to have the seats recut? I have some ITR valves that will eventually go into a B16 head and would like to know for reference.

Thanks.

the casting of the heads are the exact same...difference besides internals is the ITR got a mild hand port, ONLY on the cars that were sent into production, meaning you go buy an ITR head from ACURA now, it wont be ported...

I beg to differ on this one. I bought a brand new ITR head in the box from Acura, and it had the nice factory clean-up of the intake ports. But if I was going to buy a head and get it ported anyway, and I planned on using aftermarket cams and valvetrain, I would go with the B16 head-same thing but less money. Just upgrade the LMA's, and you've got a great racing head.

as far as the actual castings the ITR head is a joke. the port and polish looks like a child got ahold of it and barely smoothed things out. id buy a B16 head without question. unless ur lookin for the LMA, SPRINGS, CAMS and IM from the ITR head it would b worthless.

B16A/ITR+CTR heads are ALL PR3 heads.
Which means they are the same basic design. Differences between a B16A + R heads are already mentioned

PR3-R head = mild intake port job, slightly different LMA's, changed v.springs for the change in camshaft design, lighter intake valves, red valve cover -- woo.

B16 PR3 head = no port job, regular b-series LMA's, regular b-series v.springs, regular b-series intake valves, black valve cover.
