radar\laser detectors
I have the escort 8500 and its saved me a bunch of times. The one thing you have to realize is that having one is not a licence to drive as fast as you want, you still have to be a smart driver.
the Escort Passport 8500 is a badass radar detector....it has saved me from about 5 tickets already.
go to http://www.radartest.com for impartial tests on radar detectors from different manufacturers
yes, radar detectors are worth the money....although you will need laser jammers if cops in your area use laser guns a lot
radar detectors just pick up reflections of signals off of other cars that are being targeted by cops....
laser guns don't have much reflection so you don't get any advance warning of a laser gun until one has hit you....which normally means you already got caught speeding
also, check out http://www.escort.com for an explanation on all of their products
almost all of their products have a 99% approval rating...the best in my book

not really....
laser guns send out a laser beam in pulses. laser detectors/jammers detect the laser signal and then send out their own sequence of laser pulses to confuse the laser gun which will give the cop a jammed gun and then by the time the cop resets the gun and hits you with the laser again you have time to slow down and turn off your laser jammer.

Here is the review of five radar detectors from Car & Driver magazine (from February ’02, but includes the current V1 and Escort 8500: http://www.caranddriver.com/ar...ber=1
http://www.speedzones.com/ also has a good radar comparison test.
Yes, the Escort 8500 is a good radar detector, but the Valentine 1 is better and is worth the extra $100 (that is, the Escort 8500 is not worth $300 (visor clip is extra)).
If you want a cheaper radar detector, pick up the Bel 980 (under $200 on ebay), or the Bel 985. Not as good as the Escort 8500 & V1, but much better than all of the other crap out there on the market.
One more thing about the Valentine 1, take a look at what used ones sell for on ebay. They hold their value extremely well, five year old detectors easily sell for over $300 on ebay, two year old detectors (the same model as the current model) sell for $370+ (a new one costs $400).
