ugly clutch pedal noise and feel
my car makes a rythmic squeak when i cold start it in the morning. at first i thought it was noisy valves, but i've found the sound immediately goes away when i touch the clutch pedal. i don't even have to depress the pedal; the noise will stop with the lightest pedal pressure. i'm wondering what could cause the clutch to make noise? there hasn't been any change in the clutch operation.
more clutch pedal fun! the pedal gives me a "grinding" feel as it travels through the last 1/2 of the pedal stroke. what kind of lube can be used on the pedal shaft in the footwell?

I just had my clutch reservoir bled and filled with ATE Super Blue. Made a world of difference, although my problems weren't quite the same as yours. Couldn't hurt to try.
pull the release fork boot off of the front of the tranny - you need to put lube in spot where your slave cylinder is pushing on the fork.
You will find it dusty & dry....which is why even the slightest touch stops the sound. Lube it up w/high-temp grease & your good to go as far as the squeaky sound...
Good luck on the grinding portion of your post. You may find the above solves it too.

budman, do you think white lithium grease would get the job done? any pictures of the release fork boot? i should be able to get this done tonight.

i am experiencing EXACTLY what you describe. i did a clutch fluid bleed/flush yesterday and thought it was gone. but the noise is back and so is the inconsistent engagement.

It could cause that "rough" feel you described.
As for the boot - I don't have a picture, but you can remove it with your hands & reinsert it into the tranny case when complete = no tools required. I'd spend $3 on high-temp grease if I were you. I don't know if white lithium would end up making a mess! .02

Normally you'll start hearing noise and/or feeling grinding while engaging and disengaging the clutch.
It's a major pain to replace, though (you have to drop the tranny, same as doing the whole clutch), so definitely try to eliminate other causes first.

Because I care about you guys, I have to warn you...
I thought my Throw-out bearing was going before the whole mess with my tranny, So I did the what most people would do... Have a shop that i trusted to yank the tranny out and put in a new tb . But when I went to pick up my car from the shop, the guy said there is something else other then the bearing which seamed rather good... Something inside the tranny is shot. And there is the start of my tranny nightmare.
Just be careful you don't spend the time ot money thinking its just the TB, have someone who knows really take a look and drive.
Good luck.

I have exactly the same thing you guys have. Inconsistant engagement (when I'm going uphill from a stop) and sqeeking noise at start up but when I lightly tap on the clucth (dont even need to depress it, just tap) the sqeek gos away?

lol. Two tranny pulls later, I feel your pain. Been there done that. I replaced my TO bearing too to cure some noises when I replaced my clutch. Guess what it wasn't the TO bearing but rather the Input bearings inside the tranny that were making the noise, so in three months I had to pull the box again !
Moral of the story. Don't pull the tranny and replace something unless your absolutely sure that's what's wrong!

That sound you desribe is a bad input shaft bearing, not a bad throwout bearing. I've seen it countless times (2 on my personal cars through the years and have seen it on other cars as well).
Bad TO bearings squeak when the clutch pedal is pressed IN and stop when the pedal is OUT (think about how your clutch works). A bad input shaft bearing squeaks when the pedal is OUT but stops as soon as any pressure is put on the pedal.
The IS bearing will get louder with time. It's not hard to replace, just have to open the tranny up and need access to a press. It is definitely a warranty item as long as your car is still under warranty.
Good luck,
