Default Removing the head from the block

Has anyone removed the head from the block while theengine was still in the car? I'm thinking about attempting this so that i can save about 300 to have the head ported. How hard is it? Anything particularly hard about it? How long should it take? I guess my main worry is putting it all back together and that it all lines up correctly.
Thanks

BTW, this is going to be done on a gsr (don't think it's much different than doing it on an ITR block). It just seems that there is more mechanically inclined people on this forum than the regular integra one

i just did this last week. just remove the wiring harness. i like to keep the intake mani on for an extra handle, dont know bout GSR but the type R head has 2 bolts holding the intake mani on a bracket. remove PS pump and all coolant hoses. unbolt the headbolts from outside to in to prevent warpage, this goes for the cam tower things too.

oh and get a helms that helps too. took me like 45 min.

Its not that hard. Pull the exhaust manifold bolts and brackets off, pull it off and below the head. Remove cam cover and all the emissions and fuel stuff off the manifold (remove everything and the harness plugs next to the driver side shock tower and set everything over next to the battery. Remove p/s bolts (dont unhook lines), middle timing belt cover, loosen tensioner, pull belt off. Remove cams... unbolt head and take head/IM off together.

Its not to bad. Everything is pretty straight forward, just remember the couple bolts holding the IM bracket to the block. I forgot those the first time I did it and stood around trying to figure out why it wouldnt come off.

There weren't any hard to reach bolts or "difficult situations" you guys ran into? I'm just tryin' to figure out the potential of the "oh ****" mishap. And when you bolt it back on, just line up the TDC mark on the crank and line up the cams at tdc too right?

line it up to TDC before you pull the head off

difficult bolts? not really.... all the little clips holding the connectors and **** on are a pain.

Dont forget to order new gaskets. all of them. because the one you dont have is the one thats not re-useable.

Heck.. While you have it off, you might as well do the timing belt and water pump too.. And don't forget a valve adjustment.
