Default B18C1 down to a SOHC D16

WEll I have been thinking.
I got some questiions and would like some opinions on what to do.

Right now I have a B18C1. and its burning some oil somewhere. We "THINK" Stem seals because the compresion test came back fine and the leakdown came out ok/ so the valves are sealing.

I was tossing soem ideas.

1. If its isnt the valve stem seals. then just pulling the block and doing a small rebuild. Keeping all stock components just doing a Basic OEM rebuild to stock.

2. Buying a D16Y7 and throwing a Y8 head on it and boosting it. Of coarse I will build it a little. and then slowly building my B18C1.

3. Buying a D16Y7 and then selling my whole swap. With the money I get from my swap buying a D16Y8 and then Rebuilding that motor fully. Pistons, rods, Cams, Turbo, Knife crank Valves. You know.

So I am really tossign Idea 3 around. #2 seems like it will cost more. and 1 is about the the cost of buying a D16Y7.

I just need some ideas and some insight. What do you all think?

I dont need smart *** comments I need real insight and opinions on what you people would do

It seems that you may be on a budget. In that case I would recommend option #3 as you can get more out of it. I am rebuilding my D16Y8 for a 100+ shot of nitrous. It will cost me less than a complete B18C1 swap would've cost. This is how I answered my dilema since I was on a budget. Which would be faster a bone stock B18C1 swap or a D16Y8 with a 100 shot or more? That's a no brainer.

Thats exactly what I was hoping to hear. I really am kinda on a budget. So to Take my motor and get a nice D16Y8 running is what I wanted to hear. With the D16Y7 running in my car I would vertually have no down time. And I would always have a back up motor.

Glad to hear it. I am building a D16Y8 block to replace the one that's in my car now. I bought a bare block for $75 and a crank for $50, if you ask me $125 is worth it for no downtime. I'd like to see someone do the same for so cheap with a B Series.

I would just get your d16 and just throw it in to get you from point a to point b and build the gsr. Just my .02 cents

That sounds like a good idea. I mean, I love the idea of a d-series build up, and that is actually my plan as well, but if I already had a better engine I would probably just stick with that. Its up to you, I don't know how much it will cost you to get the B18 running well again, so just try to do the math for both scenarios.

Very true lol....
I still stick to my idea but do what you want. I have a 95 gsr in my 95 civic and i am in the middle of rebuiliding it, im fortunate enough to have a another car i can borrow most of the time. So there is downtime and lots of it cause i work really slow but i get it done. Do the math and money will persuade you one way or another.

My guess is that money will persuade you to keep the GSR engine. A turbo d16 seems like a cheap and powerful option, but it is really only cheaper in the initial cost of the engine. Unless you go with a junkyard setup, or really hustle to get good prices on stuff you piece together yourself, you will spend a considerable amount of money. Find out the cost of rebuilding the b18 first, then start from there.

APEX turbo is currently $1200, if you do the labor D16 rebuild is about $1200. Price of a GSR is at least $3000 complete. That leaves about $600 for tuning. It will smoke the GSR.

600 left for tuning? What will you tune, the APEXi kit comes with no fuel management. You can get the APEXi kit, and you will still need intercooler, gauge(s), fuel pump, vortech 12:1 FMU or some other type of fuel management. Then the other stuff like a BOV, injectors if you plan higher boost (which I would assume with a built d16). I'm telling you, it all adds up. It would be nice if 1200 bucks would get you boosted (with reliability), but with that kit you will be spending closer to 2500 when all is said and done.

I got all these for my nitrous setup.....
DSM 450cc injectors......$60
Hondata S200...............$240
255lph HP fuel pump......$120
That would be enough to run 5 or 6 psi if you wanted to boost. Quick as the GSR swap. Then the good part is when you can spring enough money for intercooler and all the other stuff, you can raise your boost.

Apex turbo for 1200??
Does the apex turbo fit the greddy manifold cause i would like the apex better then the greddy turbo?

I doubt it will, not without modification. Anyway, if you just want to replace the turbo, why pay 1200 for the kit, you could find a bigger, better turbo for that kind of money. One that might even fit the GReddy manifold as well. Besides, I remember your setup, you have tuning to do mister! I won't allow you to spend any more money on other things!
