tranny question- need help
OK, my tranny's bearing- i think that it's the main bearing(?) - it makes a sound when the clutch is not engaged, when the clutch is engaged it's fine. all of teh work on my car has been done by myself, and my gf's dad who is a mechanic; but neither of us know anything about transmissions. how much will it cost to get it fixed, or should i just order a used tranny & hope that it's in better condition?
its more than likely just your throw out bearing you dont have to know anything about trannies to replace it either drop your tranny pull it out put in the new one. If you can put in a clutch you can put in all the bearings.
for me the noise was my diff bearing, countershaft bearing and mainshaft bearing. the diff bearing had to much play in it so the ring gear was rubbing the tranny case putting metal shavings into all of the clutch housing bearings.
if this is the case, i would fix it asap. drain the tranny fluid to see if there are metal flakes in the fluid.

Thanks Breaka- do you think that it will be cheaper to fix it, or should I pick up another SI tranny & hope that it's in better shape? which will be more cost effective.

its might be more cost effective to buy another tranny, BUT once you replace the bearings in yours, your tranny will be like brand new (minus the syncros). you might want to just pick up a rebuild kit since its not too much more than the bearings would be from honda...
you might want to IM serious about the tranny rebuild kit. i know he bought one and he even has a how-to on his site.

It's a gamble buying another tranny. You could get a better one, or a worse one. Replacing all the bearings and synchros would probably be $600 in labor alone.
I just went through the same thing. After replacing a mainshaft bearing 2 years ago, the noise re-appeared. I don't find it cost effective to replace each bearing as each one goes out. I'm going to wait, as I'm no tranny expert and it costs a lot to break down a tranny.
Another option would be to pick up a used tranny, and rebuild it. Then put it into the car so you won't have any downtime (aside from swapping, but that's only 6 hours at most).

I talked to some of my friends that do that work, they only charge around 150 - 250 to change out the bearings. So, it would be better to fix yours than just take a gamble.

Mine always makes noise; I replaced it when I put the new clutch in.
