i'm a "Gross Polluter"! failed my smog test!!!
took my smog test this morning thinkin i should pass easily but i FAILED!!! the tech said that i was running a little too rich and that a new cat should solve the problem, can anyone second that? results are on top
here's my set-up now:
-1995 Integra LS
-JDM B20b motor (non-vtec, stock internals)
-LS ECU (obd1)
-AEM short Ram
-DC 4-2-1 Headers
-Ngk Blue Wires
-Single Platnum plugs
That's pretty much it....
That a boy!
Gross polluters rock!
Try putting OEM plugs back in, get car and cat super hot, and go try again.
If you can get your hands on another CAT, its worth a shot.
I dont see why you would fail really.
Are the Injectors the same?

just find a smog place that will pass you anyways, as long as youre not blowing out alot of smoke. thats what i did till i got my cat, youll probably have to pay them but its worth a shot, just talk to the owners, theyre pretty much all shady anyways. Peace

I ran into the same issue....the DC header does not allow the cat to heat up very well where the stock manifold creates more heat and will heat the cat up more. Also, replace your cat and make sure your fuel pressure is set to stock. After three tries, my GSR finally passed when I put the stock manifold back on. Good luck!

i'm getting it tested again after skoo 2day with a cx ecu, i'm hoping the fuel curve on that is a lot less, if that doesnt work then i'm back to stock headers and a borrowed cat.
Take a long hard drive before you get there.
When you get there leave the car running so the cat doesn't cool down much

And IM sent.

i failed as well, but i had high HC and CO emission numbers, got another appointment tomorrow :\
adding to this thread, can a re-chipped p28 ecu ALONE cause HIGH hc & co numbers? (and if not, what can?)
Thanks people.

IF only the state ref worked that way
what a happy world this would be, heh.

Yes!
Chipped ECU dumps more fuel, and pulls more timing.

hows your temperature. i mean engine temp. any exhaust mod will effect an asm emissions test result. exhaust flow may be moving too fast for the cat to store oxygen to burn off the excessive gasses. the temp erature thing is cause i see your Nox readings very high lower temp and corrected timing = lower Nox goo
d luck

Running rich won't cause high NOX, which is what you gross polluted on. Running too lean, having your timing too far advanced, high compression, or engine running hot will cause high NOX-as well as a cat that is not doing it's job. Non-functioning EGR valve will also cause high NOX, but most Integra's don't run EGR valves. I would check ignition timing first, bump it back a little from stock, and go from there.

whoa! u serious do know your stuff! i went to a non test-only station that my friend knew the tech guy, we didn't know at first that is wasn't a test only station so i couldn't get it smog there, however, the guy told me that all i probably needed was a new cat, retard timing a lil, and maybe a egr valve. he said it wasn't that i had too much fuel, it's just that i'm running too hot. i'm impress

I think you are in more trouble than you think. You now have to take your car to a California State REF to get smogged.
A few years I failed a smog check as a "Gross Polluter" and had to take my car to the REF. Check to see if you do have to take it there.
Good Luck!

ive also been told that if you failed and became classified as gross polluter, youd have to take it toa test only place to smog.

Once a car is labeled a "gross polluter", it can only be certified at a "test only" station. It's no big deal, test only stations are everywhere. The only thing different about a "test only" station is that they are not allowed to do repairs, that's it. Get your car's emissions to within passing standards, and you get your certificate, no worries

yeah, when I failed smog as a "gross polluter" back in 96 , there werent as many Test Only Stations around, so I had to go to the REF...
I dont know how I passed..
