Default Need advice, Installing Skunk2 stage 1 cams, do I need valve springs, retainers?

I need some help. i just bought some Skunk 2 Stage 1 cams and cam gears. I am planning to have them installed in my 01 ITR motor. I track this car regularly. Skunk2 says that upgraded valvetrain is not required but is this going to be reliable if I just use the stock ITR valvetrain.
How high do I need to rev the Stage 1 cams to get their full potentiol? If I need to rev higher than stock then I assume upgraded valvetrain would be required.

Also, what power should I be expecting to make? I currently have an 01 ITR motor with JDM Mugen header, gutted cat, Invidia N1 exhaust(2.36 ID), AEM CAI, VAFC, P08 chipped ecu with Skunk2 program. With this setup I made 180 hp at the wheels. What should I expect to make with the Stage 1 cams and stock valvetrain thanks. I tried the search with no luck for these cams installed on B18C5's and stock valvetrain.

Thanks,

AW

It will be reliable if you stick to reving within the limits of the stock ITR valve train. Which is debateable what that truely is, most say dont go higher then 9. I know the stage one cams peak much lower then the stage 2's so you should be just fine shifting within the limits of the stock valve train. Your looking at an approximate 10-15whp gain.

Do you have stage 1's? If so I would like to know where the peak rpm is for these cams.

Does anyone have dyno charts of these cams on a B18C5. Also, are they using aftermarket valvetrain or not. I track at road course alot so I don't want to lose another engine because a retainer or valvespring gave out.

If the power peaks at 8500 rpm then I should be able to leave the stock ITR valvetrain. Does anyone have any experience with this.

Thanks,

AW

you should be safe running with stock. I used itr outer intake springs and portflow inners to be safe. I used to run stock valve train up to 9k. I broke my motor so i don't do that anymore.

LOL, "hell on wheels" Is that a good thing?

No, that is MPH's ITR. I remembered him putting out nice #'s, so I did a search really quickly.

I don't have the stage 1's but i was really really close to buying a set. I ended up going all out on my tranny first but I did some research on them.

From looking at the 3 dyno's posted above seems like they peak just before 8 500. You should have absolutely no problems with using these on stock valve train. However, some people like running aftermarket valvetrain on stock cams. It's really your decission.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will install them with the stock valvetrain. Once I have them installed and tuned I will post the dyno!

I got my JDM final drive this year as well and it is great.
