Default New car 'break in' smell?

When your RSX was new, do you remember a distinct smell around it after you've driven it?

I'm at ~150mi and wondering if my 'break in' smell is normal. No hard driving. First car with manual. Florida.

Also, when I started the car yesterday morning I let it idle for a bit before going to work. There was some smoke coming out of the exhaust like the temperture outside was cold. I didn't see it this morning, is that normal?

Lastly, while breaking in, since I'm not hitting high RPMs, do I have to put in 91/93 octane fuel into the car or is 87/89 okay?

And do I want to be between 3000 and 2000 when I let off the clutch between shifts?

thanks,
funk

First off, you shouldn't be hitting the gas at all between shifts. If that's just where the motor is at when you shift, that's fine, just make sure you're not holding the gas down while your shifting (good way to wear a clutch out).

The smells you have are normal. There are all kinds of solvents, lubes, oils on the motors of new cars that will heat up and burn off. The smoke coming out of the exhaust isn't something I'd worry about either. Typically, the exhaust has some oils in it as well that must burn off. Even beyond that, if it's a small amount of white "smoke" at idle, it's typically just moisture that's being burned off the inside of the pipe (especially if it's humid).

Finally, your car needs 93 octane (or whatever high test is in your area). Even if you do not drive hard, the car can still have detonation due to the compression on that motor. Granted, it'll be worse if you were on it hard but keep using it just the same. With lower octane, the computer will typically change the timing to make it "safe" for the motor and you'll lose power.

Dave, you are saying that the gas should not be hit between shifting? I did not know that. If I don't I feel the car jerk.

Should the rpms be held around 2700 when the clutch is in and putting in another gear?

Is it possible to pull out the clutch tooo smoooothly (and put unneeded wear on it?)

If ther eis a jerk that means that you are leting the clutch out too fast! Go easie and smoother on it

When shifting for example....
(street driving)
Tach hits 3-4k take yoru foot off the gas, clutch in put in gear, slowly pull the clutch back out and apply gas again! If you are getitng jerks you are geting to crazy with the clutch pulling it out hard

i don't have an rsx type-s, but you probably should be using ONLY 91+ octane.
