Redline tranny fluid
I posted this in the forced induction forum too........but I need to ask my Prelude guys too.
I am about to drop my motor back in this weekend. My question is has anyone used Redline's tranny fluid? I heard from my friends here that they used it and had no problems. I just wanted to get some opinions from you guys here if I should use Redline or stick w/ Honda's fluid.

First and fifth became difficult at only 18k miles on my 99 base 5sp. Someone on this forum recommended Syncromesh to me, and I decided to try it. HUGE difference. More than you can possibly imagine. Shifting is trivial now, in any temperature, or engine RPM. I bought it at a Chevy dealer for $10/qt. I needed 2.5 qt for my transmission. MPG went up a tad too. Honda MTF is utter garbage compared to Syncromesh imo.
Back when I had a SHO there were similar debates about what to use; most who used Redline reported that the effects "wore off" after 1 year, which does not inspire confidence. But if you change your fluid often this might not matter to you.

Yeah, I'd be interested in knowing this too!
I thought about switching to Redline MTL at my 60k service. I'm at 53,600 right now.

I know a lot of Nissan guys that run Redline....and they swear by it.
I've been scared to run it in my Honda because I've read/heard that it doesn't work very well with them....that's not very sure for my likes.
Some guys tell me they LOVE it, smooth shifting, the results last etc, and then I've heard other guys tell me that it tore their tranny up, and the synchros went to the crapper.
There's just too much contradicting information for me to try it yet. So I'll stick with Honda MTF until somebody can be at least 75% sure with me

I had it in my tranny a while back. I **** on it! IMO, its too thin for our trannies and I think that it caused my syncs to wear out prematurly. I will never use that stuff again!

if your shifting is at all difficult/sluggish, try syncromesh. it's a superior lubricant. it is well worth the money. I am at 45k miles right now, and I can't imagine shifting w/o it.
Well I just went and bought the Honda tranny fluid. How do I know what weight it is. Does Honda only make one kind? The bottle itself just says Honda Manual Transmission fluid. It doesnt have the weight anywhere? Is this the right one?
man my mech is trying to get me to switch over to royal purple trannyF. Im running the Synthetic Oil now and love it...kinda considering trying the stuff

I have heard good things about that too, I was going to get but for some reason I am still leaning on the Honda fluid, guess bcuz in the past I have heard from other people that the Honda tranny fluid is still the best for our cars after they tried many others. I just dont know.....

so does anyone know if thats the right tranny oil i bought?? Again it says Honda Manual Transmission fluid. But it doesnt specify the weight of the oil, the reason I ask is cuz it specifies a certain weight in the Helms. I just want to make sure this is the right one b4 i put it in.

Thread Resurrection.
I WAS interested in the Redline Tranny fluid until I read this thread.
Does anyone have any experiences with other fluids, particularily the Royal Purple.
I'm also interested in hearing more about this Synchromesh (which I've never heard of before).
Thanks.

Redline Tranny fluid is very thin and after a while it turns into a water like fluid after a while.. that fluid is made for high temperature i believe...
Friend of mine who used it in his 5th gen told me to stick to the honda fluid... so i did.. but i hear good stuff about that syncromesh stuff for domestics.. so i might give that a try...
hope that was some help

Redline is junk in my opinion. They used it when I was having my ACT clutch installed. It was fine for a while, but it didnt take to long, an dbefore I new it, I had a bad case of 5th gear grind. To make things worse, 2nd gear would not synchronize when shifting at redline. Its rather embarrasing to be at the track, and have issues with 2nd gear. Changed to GM synchromesh.
Problems are gone.
