GSR running Crower 63402 broked in 2 pieces
My friend's car broke down tonight reving @ 9000rpm from 1st to 3rd. After the hitting 3rd at 8900 rpm, the exhaust cam broke in 2 pieces, right on each end. What would be the worst case scenario the motor into? do you guys think he bent some valves? the car shut off instantly after 3rd gear. He tried to crank it over as soon as the motor shut down because he thought it was minor. What he wants to do is take those cams off and put skunk 2 stage 2 in place without taking the head off but I told him that it may not be a good idea because some metal shavings may damage more parts internally. He's planning of just change the oil and flush a couple of time and pray that everything just fine. Please let me know of what to do. Thanks in advance.

So you suggest that to go ahead and take off the head and see if something else might be bad?

when you have pictures of metal soup, please post them up. I'd be interested in seeing actual damage. (yes, take off head, and see whats left)

I'll post some pics as soon as I get the car to my house.

Sorry to hear it. And the head is definately gotta come off. At the very least, he bent some exhaust valves, though it's probably worse than that. Who installed the cams? What were the cam caps torqued to? What valvesprings was he using? Give us a post-mortem so we can all learn from this.

Ouch. Thats one of my biggest fears. Hopefully shes not too bad and I would definitely pull the head. Better safe than sorry.

Bah, I've broken a Jun exhaust cam in 5 pieces, and all I did was bend 8 exhaust valves. Dinged, the pistons, but nothing that couldn't be sanded out

I've heard of other cams snapping (toda, JUN, Skunk2) but when crower snaps I have not seen a motor that survives.
I'll take those cams off this weekend and I'll get some pics. I had use this cams in my car before and had no problem with it. I even use the 63403 and had no problem. I had ITR head and he's got GSR. I put these cams for him and he had no problem with it until he decided to rev it to 9000 rpm and I think the reason why it broked because maybe the lost motion assy. were to blame just like Earl said on the above link. More like valve float. He is using crower valvetrain. I'll call crower and see if they warranty their cams. I hope they'll replace it without cost. I should not let him borrowed my 11,000 rpm redline ecu, and I told him not to take it so high on the rev. He was insisting to use my ecu and there you go, bang!
Well Vic, From the pics you posted, Looks like he has a Broken motor...
I'd Hate to say it But he should have listen to you about reving that high..Sound like he has a hard head..But Oh well..
One question for you Vic?? Did he not feel it not pulling anymore after 8200 Rpms??
Like you said " there you go, Bang"

Actually, his motor is fine. not a ding on the pistons but a couple of valve markings when it hit the pistons. He had maybe 5-6 bent valves but other than that, everything else look good. I told him he was very lucky that that's all the damage it made.

I did not ask him that yet, but I will though. I called crower and ask them if what they can do for him about broken cam, and he said he'll replace both of them with brand new set which is the new design that they came out. It's 63402-2 instead of the old 63402. He told me that he have the old version cams set and the 63402-2 he said I should not have anymore problem. That was a great customer service on their behalf. They stand behind their product and I'm not disappointed at all using their cams. I'll still use them even for my own car or I'll recommend it to all my friends. Again, Crower is a great company. I don't care what people said about them.

Interesting, if you happen to talk to Crower again, do you mind asking specifically what they changed between their 1st gen and 2nd gen cams?

Glad to hear that the motor was not more severely damaged. Good luck with the repairs . Interesting that Crower says he changed the design of the cams, what's different I wonder?

I can answer that from my own experience with both of their cams(I also broke a set):
The "updated" version apparently have a milder grind, or shall we say, now they learned how to harden their cams? LoL
I have that updated version in my motor as we speak and I am making plenty of power up to and beyond 8800RMP...although I have yet to get them to a dyno, that comes thursday.
I agree with the service they provided, they were helpful and efficent with me.
They replaced:
cams
springs
retainers
valves(2 times)
all for free.
If you want pics, I have plenty of them, just ask

Of what I heard yes, the newer cams suppose to make more power than the older ones. I some pics of their new cams if anyone is interested.

The site is not working right now. I'll post some pics of the new cams. It looks totally different than the old ones.
