Default How do I find an exhaust leak???

Hi everyone,

I hear what sounds like a fluttering sound when I let off the gas. It sounds like an exhaust leak. Is there anyway to pinpoint the location without taking it to a shop? Thanks!

get close to the ground and listen. have your friend rev it up a little bit, and listen for the exhaust leak. try it next to a wall, so you can hear it better.

i had a small exhaust leak, but it was because the gasket between the muffler section and b-pipe was bad.

Sometimes their will be water drips.......If it is small i wouldn't worry about it, you could tell if it was real bad.

If I can hear it, doesn't that make it bad? I figure if it wasn't too bad than I wouldn't be able to hear it. I was told if there's a leak it affects performance. Any way to tell besides by listening? I tried to listen, but all I hear is the loud muffler....

Jack it up or put on lift. turn it on and cover the exhaust your hand(cover hand with a rag)......create backpressure......dont keep your hand on it., 3-5 secs.

This is what you should do.

Of course do it with the doors open or even outside.

also look for black carbon spray on the underside of the car where the exhaust runs down (top of exhaust that is not visual to the eye) the carbon soot will mix with the condensation and sometimes spray out of the leak

Thanks for the advice!
Will covering up the muffler cause any harm to the engine?

Easy way, if you suspect it's a weld is to spray paint the weld area with silver or white paint. You'll see a black dot or dots where the leak is at.
