traffic light wouldn't change
today, i was waiting for a light to change in my favor, but it never did. I noticed a button for pedestrians but i would have had to doggy paddle my way over to the pole or put down my bike on the sidestand really quick. Both of these solutions seemed troublesome so i waited. Luckily a car came on the opposing side soon after forcing the light to change. Now I know theres some type of sensor in the road thats meant to pick up cars. But how does a motorcyclist deal with it?
I guess I could also avoid this intersection altogether, but that would add a considerable amount of distance to my daily travel. Any thoughts>?

HAHAHHA, I hate that. Its always at night so I just go right through them

Get a "Green light trigger". It triggers off those loops sensors on the ground. The GLT is nothing but a strong magnet, and some have success using the magnet off old 1.x gig harddrives. But for only 10$ i find it easier to just order one than locating an old harddrive

yeah or how about having to wave the car behind you to creep up to set off the sensor. I blow alot of left turns at night

Those triggers dont always work. Sometimes you can just jump off and go hit the cross walk if yer close. But sometimes you really just gotta run it. I've heard if it doesnt change for you in 4 rotations then it is considered a malfunctioning light and to be treated like a 4 way stop. i.e. excuse to run it.

Where have you heard the 4 rotation thing at?

Depending on what state you live in, traffic lights are triggered by lines in the road (these are actually magnetic sensor set off by metal on the car) or if you live in Florida, there are cameras atop the traffic light that watch for approaching vehicles and set a timer off to go GREEN light. Naturally, if there are cars in the opposing direction, the timer will begin when the 1st car is scene.
I have one of those "green light triggers" and it still doesn't work (it's just a magnet you attack to your bike to attempt to trip the sensors).
I just go. I've been pulled over once for it and I told him what's up, and he let me go.
Technically speaking, they're faulty, but they don't want they generally err on the side of being less-sensative than the other way, so as to not get false triggers. So, if a cop gives you grief, just say "It's faulty, in which case it becomes a 4-way stop. I stopped, and went"

Around here you can see where the sensors are in the pavement. When I come up to a light, I just weave back and forth over the top of them before I come stop. I might look funny cause I end up on one side or the other of the lane, but it works.
i would run it if i could but, its a big multiple lane expressway with a 45mph speed limit. This means there's constant traffic. I'd probably risk (or lose) my life for sure if i attempted to run it.

Yeah
Welcome to the world of only right turns.
You can try slapping a bunch of old hard-drive batteries on the bottom of your bike. It's equivelent to the green light trigger, and the more you can find space to mount, the easeir. Just keep in mind you'll pick up crap driving around (i've gotten bolts and all kinda of stuff down there. Too bad money isn't ferous).

its so funny to read something like that. i HATED having to wait at the lights and having cars just driving past while you wait forever. and then when it does change you still dont get the light(just gives the people going the other direction the green and the arrow for the turners).
Try shutting your bike down as you roll up to a stop and then starting the bike again. The magnetic field created by your starter motor is usually enough! If not go with the kickstand on the sensor line.
Blowing through a light in some states is "very bad" watch that one.
Hope that helps,

Does anyone know how this (running red lights that aren't motorcycle-sensitive) works with stoplight cameras? I see more and more cameras sprouting up throughout the San Gabriel Valley (SoCal).
To my understandment in caifornia if you wait for 3 cycles of the light and it does not turn green you can go ahead and turn... (i was told by a cop who must have watched me sit at a light for 20 minutes waiting for it to turn while he was parking in a 7 11 parking lot. Another friend told me the same thing....
Im not sure if i trust the cop those cause he was flirting after he saw i wasnt a dude and only until after then did he tell me i could blow through the light

thats how i felt .. until i got a ticket. haha.
i'm waiting at a light to turn left on the main road here in Puyallup, there are 2 lanes on each side, and i'm with about 6 other riders, so we're sitting in rows of two, and no cars can pull behind us and trigger.
Finally, I and only I run it, and i see the cop behind me. (it gets better). I pull into Krispy Kreme, not entirely sure if he's comin for me or not, but i park behind a van where they can't see me, and they drive right past me.
Then i stupidly enough go and talk to my friends quick, or else i could have just left and been done with it. I see the cop pull out of the parking lot and i get on it and try and get out of the area. But SHE see's me, and is the biggest bitch ever. The end.
