Default 87 Auto transmission

I just bought an 87 LXi Hatchback. The Tranny thumps when shifted between P, R, and D4. Every accord I test drove in this year range had the same problem in various degrees. Is this normal, or am I in for trouble soon? My guess is that the motor mounts are worn? TIA

Mine does that too. You might want to change the tranny fluid. I did and it helped...

you should change the tranny oil every 30,000 miles MAX i change it every 15,000 because there is no filter in honda trannys and if the oil gets too dirty then it helps wear out the clutches early so i figure spending 12.00 for a tranny oil change is cheap comapired to pulling out a tranny and having it rebiult.... and i agree with every one else Honda tranny fluid only

edit: your clunking noise may be a bad motor mount check them out ...

a lot of the honda cars do not retart the timing during a shift and it makes the shift appear to be very hard. i believe that it was rectified on 98 and newer cars

The problem doesn't affect driving shifting, only when initially put into gear.
