Default Im stumped. Valve question here

Alright guys,

I am making this post hoping that I get lucky and someone reading this could have had the same experience as me or similar.

To make a long story short, my timing belt slipped while I was hand rotating the crank. Valves made contact with pistons but I took my chances and assembled the motor anyways, hoping it didnt do any damage.

I assembled everything and adjusted the valves. When I started the motor it made a loud ticking noise from the head. Similar to the sound of very loose valves, but also close to the sound of a bent valve. The ticking gets more constant as rpm goes up but doesn't really get louder.

My first thought was bent valves. So i did a leak down test and leak down came out almost perfect, only 2% leak in each cyl. Comp. is 180-190 accross too on a stock LS.

I know this is one of those questions that is extemely vague but I am kinda looking for anything right now as I am stumped as to what the sound could be. could valves be bent and still put out such good #'s? any parts on the head I can inspect that might cause it to make that noise? at this point I am open to any suggestions. thanks guys

chris

i seriously doubt you spun a bearing! tell us more about the noise .. is it a hard knocking/thumping or more of a metalic tapping? have you done a valve adjustment yet? if i were you i would do a valve adjustment and another leakdown. it that offers no conclusion then try pulling the head and looking it over. hope you figure it out!

This might be too obvious, but are you sure it isn't just the fuel injectors?

boostinb16, the noise is a high pitched ticking. Sounds like very badly adjusted valves. Gets more consistant w/ rpm but I would not say much louder. I don't think its a bearing either the motor still idles normal, doesnt stumble or anything @ idle. I havn't driven it yet though. I adjusted the valves to .007ex/.004in but I am going to do it again tonight just to make sure.

raene, Its not the injectors. Definitly in the head. my old stock injectors used to tick so i know the sound.

Teamgendai, i will give that a shot tonight. what would having looser clearances do?

Why did you adjust them so tight? I think he just meant for you to adjust them to spec. Or... what's the clearance supposed to be for your engine?

I adjusted them to spec, .007ex/.004in is spec on an LS motor. The motor was definitly cold but I gonna redo it tonight just to make sure I did it right.

Well it turns out I am just a slacker and did a crappy valve adjustment the first time. lol. I went back through and redid all the ones I didn't like and the car idles smooth as hell right now. I think I was just paranoid. Its always the simplest thing. Anyways, car is back together and running good thanks for the help guys. oh yeh, .004/.007 is spec for an LS motor. later
