hey, my friend has a 88 crx with a d16 with about 176*** miles on it he recently encountered a problem with his engine. First his check engine light came on ( code 1, something about air mixture) and when he his hits the gas a dark brownish smoke comes out of the exhaust. Also flecks of oil end up on the bumper after driving for a while. i told him i would ask you all what you thought of it.

 

sounds like a blown headgasket !

No, it sounds like he is running rich... he needs to replace his O2 sensor... the black stuff is just soot from the engine...
