I may be willing to amend my opinion of HIDs now.
Friday night I was driving down to Austin. It's a drive I've made many, many times without incident. Until this time.
I was outside the limits of any city in an area with no streetlights and too much traffic for high-beams when it happened. You've heard of potholes, right? This was a pothill: a slight depression followed immediately by a large, sharp bump. I saw it in my headlamps in plenty of time, but what I didn't see was quite what it was. It looked just like another patch in the asphalt dogturd some wit had the nerve to name "Interstate 35." I had no idea of how nasty it was until it was too late.
I was doing about 80 mph. It was on my left side, and it felt like at least one of the wheels left the ground for a brief moment. It tweaked my alignment pretty good (I'm probably lucky that's all it did). No harm, no foul, yet I realise that it could just as easily have been something more dangerous or potentially harmful.
Now I did actually see something in plenty of time. What I didn't see was detail. To be fair, I can't be sure that I would have seen better with HIDs. However, I do think I'll be looking into them with less skepticism in the near future.

Frost? What's that?
Actually, I think this was a poorly patched pothole. It was square, and I don't remember it being there last month. Whatever it was, it sure did suck.
