anybody know.....I have always wanted to know what it is and what it does.

 

I believe it goes inline between the intake and valve cover. On turbo motors it is comon for oil to blow through this line and make it into the intake and of course through your motor. The catch can catches that oil so that your crankcase still has ventilation but no oil makes it to your intake. But I might be wrong.

Catchcan goes inline between your PCV valve and the intake manifold.

This filters small amounts of oil from crank ventilation which is routed into your manifold and down into the cylinders. You're right about the last part..

 

so its only for boosted applications?

 

Im curious about this also. Im sure theres a logical reason, but my fist instinct is, why would you want to burn oil? Especially with FI.

Nameless said it correctly. And you can use it on FI and NA.

You don't want to burn oil. The catch can is there so you won't burn oil.

 

Also lowers the octane level if you run the crankcase fumes/oil back into the intake. Even more so I would guess if you have some blowby.

 

Ive seen people put what looks like a small K&N cone filter on the valve cover as well, is this basically the same effect, in a more "dirty" way?

Yes it is, but I don't think I'd do it. I've heard of black oil "rings" being left.

Being left where? Just splatter in the engine bay?

 

Yes, it'll leave oil "rings" in the engine bay since it just vents to the atmosphere.
