Default timing mark on crank 1986 crx-frustrated.

Ok, I just put in a new head gasket and remilled head. Had this jackass helping me that was supposed to be this big mechanic. He did half job and disapeared. I'm almost postive the timing is wrong.

I am slowly turning crank and can only see a small red line with two marks on either side. Now from what I've searched I'm supposed to line that up with the mark on the lower timing cover correct? I don't see any white lines on that crank at all. Nowhere. Is the red TDC?

Problem number two is on my cam gear I have two lines that are supposed to line up with the head. However I see no "Up" on it. I see some faint numbers on one side, but nothing at all that resembles "UP".

I've searched and can't find exactly the answer to my questions . So any help would really be appreciated. It's so close to being done and I need it out of my driveway. Symptoms now include erratic idle, quick drop in idle after hitting gas and stalling soon thereafter.

Please help. Thank you very much.

from what i know the red is 16to18deg advanced not tdc there should be a white line but some times it rubs off over time, there should still be some sort of punch mark where the white line was. I have a 90 civic si and my cam gear has a UP mark on it so Im not sure whats up with yours.hope that helps..

I see a very thin red with two notches on either side of it. How close would the white mark/notch be to it? Was the white mark originally as small as that red line I'm looking at? Thanks.

ya the white mark is just as small,it should be about 4to5'' away from the red mark in the clockwise position, your probably going to just have to look for the stamping mark.

On a side not once you get where the marks are, paint them back on for future ref.

Want know what is a positive thing for sure when doing your timming? Take a screwdriver and stick it through the spark plug hole and turn the crank till its @ the top of its stroke. make sure to do this on cyl. no.1. On DOHC cam engines there is a lil hole @ the end of the cam. Line that up so you can see directly down through the cam (if SOHC even have the lil hole). It sould be exaclty vertical. Then put your t-belt back on. Good luck
