this is no win subject
b17a is pretty much a b16a 160-170 hp but 110 of torque
now the the b18a is 130-142 hp(Depends on what year motor ) 124 lbs of torque
the b18a has alot more push of the line , the b17a lacks torque in low end but after 5700 when vtec kicks in the car pulls all the way to 8,000 making power , while the b18a power peak is around 6,000-6,700 rpm
it all depends on what you plan to do

1 all motor (b17 would be a better choice can can be quick and relible )
2 nos or turbo (b18a has lower compression and these motors can take its fair share of nos and boost )
3 b18 can be made into a lsvtec form , this setup can make huge power lots of horsepower and torque , downside you have to build the motor right or its not going to last long

i mean i know i can go for days taking about vtec vs non vtec , personally i have had both and prefer vtec love the sound and performance plus the vtecmotor parts are universal

B17a is a nice engine, the one thing that I dont like about it is that parts aren't that easy to find, they are out there but I have a hell of a time finding some of them, pretty sure its cause they only made for 2 years (92-93 GSR)

get a b18c1 or a b18c5. Much better than a b17 or a b16 for that matter.

b18c5 is much more expensivethe b17a. If you can find one, go b17a or if it is legal in your state, get a JDM b16 a from the sirII civic. It can be more easily found and you can use the OBD1 ECU with your car.

the b17 cylinder walls are thicker than the b18, think about that if you wanna boost.

whats up with all of these gay posts, "if you have the cash go for the b18c5 or b16b," who cares? hes asking about the differneces in the b17 and b18, not what to blow 5gs on.

and why get the b17 just b/c its harder to find..?

Can you even do this?? Aren't the deck heights different in the motor??

You may aswell build a motor from the sounds of it.

Why are you suggesting such expensive engines? A B18C1 or B18C5 would cost him at least $1000 more than a B17 or B18A/B. I think we all know the C1 and C5 are better than the B17 or B16, but that's not what he's asking. C1s and C5s are out of most of our budgets, so just try to help answer his question. I think the B17 is an excellent engine if you have the chance to get your hands on one.. it has plenty of potential. It would be great for boost since it has the lowest compression ratio of all the DOHC VTEC engines. And if you like all-motor, it should be very powerful with raised compression. It puts out the same horsepower as the B16 with a good bit less compression. If the compression was raised to that of the B16 or higher it should be a good bit stronger. I think PCT pistons would be nice in a B17 with some nice cams.

LudeSi: Which B18 are you referring to? At first I thought you were trying to compare the 2 GSR motors, but now I'm not sure.

This thread is worthless unless he tells us which B18 he's talking about.

b17 = baller status = rarity = being different = me...so dont get one..haha

b17 you better build up, that low c/r sucks when building it up. the b18c is an AWESOME engine and i would recommend that any day over the b17. b17s have nice close gear ys1's though, but they are cable.

its' really up to you and what you wanna do w/ the car
