Default Best way to remove paint from valve cvr? (other that driving 180K miles)

My valve cvr looks like do do. I want to remove the paint from it and polish the top. Anyone have any suggestions? I know you can have it blasted with wall nut shells, or plastic beads. Is there other options? Chemical? Heat?

Thanks for the help.

this its the best and only option.....

go to auto part and buy a can of aircraft coating remover....
take valve cover off and put it close a hose.... spray the **** on the valve cover.,.... wait 1 minute and u will see all the crap bubling up. and hose the thing down..... it will become shinny , clean aluminum color.... best way and easier...

it burns like hell on your skin though

aircraft coating remover its a spray..... its a chemical designed to eat coats of undercoat, paint, clear coats... well anything at all.... it will eat some kinds fo ABS plasits.. and it hard on skin contact... it will strip the paint of the valve cover very nice and cleana nd easy... no scratches or anything.... just spray, wait 1 min and spray water.... thats it

So what if the cam moves? Its not like you have the timing belt off or anything. I did cover my head with a peice of newspaper just so it wouldnt get dusty or have any bugs fly into it or anything.

How long did you leave the Aircraft remover before wiping it off?

you guys should know that when you use this "aircraft remover", you need to be wearing googles, rubber gloves, an apron or smock, and breather mask. That chemical is not to be used with light consideration. It doesn't have to burn you like it will instantly when you get it on you to harm you.

Thanks for the input. I will have to pick up some tomorrow and give it a go. That is so much easier than sanding.

methyl-ethyl-keytone

and don't spray this anywhere near anything that you don't want stripped. It's also good for removing clearcoat off of rims before you paint them.

if you have the money then just get the thing powdercoated....i got all the letters on my DOHC valve cover grinded off, side cut out for cam gears, and powdercoat for $60 shipped..i think ihave the guys email around somewhere...

i painted my sohc valve cover after stripping it down with a power sander then i used hi-temp engine paint about 4 coats plus clear coat about 5 weeks later i sprayed de-gunk on my engine pay and hosed it down and all the paint just bubbled right up and flaked off.

Thanks again. Tonight I tried oven cleaner, cause I had it and it was basicaly free, let it sit for 3 hours. Final result, nothing. Made a trip to the parts store and layed down $4 for the aircraft stripper. Sprayed up the cover. In 20 min I hosed it off and it was amazing. Now all I have to do is polish the top surface and I am golden.

It's aluminum... it doesn't rust. That's a reaction with Fe...It will oxidize over time, though. Too long to worry about.

After you strip it just spray it with clear coat and then it will always look the same
*EDIT* get a good clear coat though otherwise it will start to turn yellow over time.

Im doning the same thing, going the parts store to get me some Aircraft cleaner. I have been doing it the hard way.

Now are you better off using some Mothers Polish, other than clear coat or you better off doing both just for better results.

If you cant find the aircraft stuff I am sure that you can get some JASCO from any hardware or home supply store. Works just as well but it is in a gel form. Good luck.

Also make sure the clear coat will stand that kind of heat, if not it will just flake off and look like crap.
