How much riding experience does he have? And I take it, this won't be his first bike? (What was his first bike anyways?)

If he's got the $$$, the R6 no doubt.

I'd go for the R6 myself...though the F3's are excellent bikes and not very expensive now.

If I had to buy a Yamaha I would get the R1, but I would try to stay away from companies who also make pianos

Honda and Kawasaki are the two motorcycle manufactures that hold the most tenure, therefore in my opinion they take presidence in value as well as R&D. Yamaha makes a great sportbike both the R1 and R6, but both those bikes will always take back seat to those of the big bore CBR as well as the CBR600F4i. On top of all this, since according to some, where is Yamaha's big bore bike??? Kaw has the ZX12, Suzuki has the Busa, and Honda has the Blackbird, yet Yamaha fails to even manufacture a bike in this class. Next lets take a look at the cruiser market. Its my understanding that Yamaha makes a V-star, and some other smaller cruisers, anyone want to stack their cruisers up to the likes of the Honda Valkyrie (6 cylinders=more than your Civic) or how about the VTX1800 (1.8 litres= more than your Civic DX) If anyone wants to talk about the off road stuff, we can go there as well, but until any foreign bike manufacturer can make a bike that rivals most small cars, your input would be a lost cause. Thank you and have a great day!
