Cam plug oil leak
Just got a 94 GSR mechanically inspected that I'm looking at purchasing and it has the typical wear and tear parts that should be looked at soon(CV boots, timing belt, brake rotors turned, clutch fluid flush). So it sounds pretty good, dealership said it was good.
They did mention that there is an oil leak in the cam plug area but said it was an easy thing to fix. Is this something I should worry about? Car has 105000km and is stock.
Thanks

Nothing serious for the exhaust cam seal. The distributor side seal can cause oil to collect in the dist cap... that can cause problems. You should replace the dist cam seal if it's leaking. For the exhaust cam side, you can either replace the seal or ghetto seal it using high temp rtv around the seal on the outside.

Remove valve cover, remove exhaust cam oil rail, then remove the last bearing cap covering the cam end seal. Pull the old one out, coat the new one in Hondabond (same as Permatex Ultra Gray) and stick it in and button everything up. My car had the older rubber seal, and I replaced it with the newer redesigned plastic seal w/ rubber o-rings.
Yeah, pick up an aftermarket cam seal replacement rather than the stock seal. STR makes a real nice one. http://www.nopi.com sells STR cam seals for $18 and change. It's what I replaced my old seal with, and it really is a huge difference in quality when you hold them side by side. It's worth the few extra bucks for the STR. Heck, that factory seal goes bad so often some company comes up with an aftermarket alternative. They really do make everything under the sun for

i have the same problem and bought a golden eagle one off the bst buy forum from a guy named motormatrix or motormatrix.com, but haven't had teh time to install yet. ITs a common problem with the older year tegs... i hear they changed the cam seals a little in teh newer years so it doesnt happen as much but i'm not sure bout that.

Yeah I got the newer plastic seal w/ o-rings. I had the original rubber seal in there for 130K+ miles, so I figure this new plastic one ($4 or so) would last at least that long, which will probably exceed the time I own the car, so why waste $20-$30 on some fancy shmancy billet one?

This statement proves you know nothing about the product. Because it isn't just a better looking seal, it is of higher quality and a better performer over the OEM seal, this fact can't be denied. Those of us who educate ourselves and give a damn about our Tegs will spend the extra $20.

with how often i see patrick on this board, i don't think i'd ever call him a newb or say he's uneducated... the quality of OEM vs aftermarket cam seals have never really been directly compared so u can't really say either way, And i say this even tho i spent the extra 20 on da GE one. Its foolishness to simply assume a higher standard of quality just because a part is aftermarket.... **** half the time its the other way around...
Much faster and easier way:
Just take off the vtec solernoid, get a flat head screw driver, hammer and ply it out. The new one should just pop in.
My mechanic did it this way in 5 minutes! Charge me $30 though, half hour labor.

that was a little out of line. I replaced mine with OEM because the OEM was redesigned. Even if it wasn't, it still won't leak for another 100K+ miles, so its not like I have to worry. How well does an oil seal have to perform? It either leaks or it doesn't. OEM replacement doesn't leak so its fine.
