Are these type of seats (with head wraparound) street legal? US/Canada?

What I've never understood, and perhaps someone can clarify for me is why is rollover protection important with aftermarket seats? No one ever says "get rollover protection" if you're using stock seats... And why can't you use 4 point harnesses without a roll bar?

 

A stock 3-point harness/seatbeat will pull (wrong work, I mean 'allow') you (to move) down and towards the inside of the car.

A 4/5 point harness locks you in place - literally.

If you were to roll, and the hood crushed, there would nowhere to go in a 4/5 point harness.

With rollover protection, the hood would not crush as substantially like it would without rollover protection.

 

Got to it too slow...

Because a 3 point belt allows one to get down below the dash level in the event of a rollover. Whereas a 4 point belt makes your melon the highest point since you cant duck down - hence the need for a rollbar.

 

On the track, where the chance of a roll is increased, using a harness without rollover protection means that you will remain upright in your seat as the roof is crushed in, thus making your head the roll bar.

Basically if you are locked upright in a rollover and the roof collapses, your head collapses. With a stock (reclining) seat you can either get out of the way *or* if violent enough the seat reclining mechanism will break and you will not be trapped upright.

Consider the following pictures - would you want to be strapped upright in this kind of crash?

And that "i'm a good/safe driver that stuff wont happen to me" is bullshit. You could have a bad accident on the street thats totally beyond your control.

 

It seems to me you'd be just as dead in either of those two crashes regardless of what kind of seat you have. *shrug*

Also consider this picture, although not as severe, still a good example.



This car is from gingerman this past saturday.
The drive was wearing a 4-point harness with NO rollover protection.

IF there was a passenger who was also wearing a 4-point, bye bye passenger. Where would that person have gone? Nowhere, that's the problem.

The drive was lucky for two reasons: a) no passenger and b) he didn't land on the driver's side of the roof. He was fine, no injuries, but it could have been much worse.

Indeed. I reckon they were very cozy with the dash and center console by the time the thrill ride was over.

Thanks AssPenny but doesn't RealTime run a rollcage? I want to see how the roof collapses with just a rollbar.

 

Yes realtime runs a rollcage. Tahts why the car is somewhat intact.

With a rollbar you could compress the a-pillar however caving in of the middle of the roof and b-pillar (which is what will own your noodle) is prevented by a rollbar.

 

Didn't PK end up winning the race with that same car the next day

His team stayed up most of the night beating it into shape (and kept most of the campers up all night in the process).
