its OBD2... Its just part of the engine code, here is some others...

a1 is before 96 (OBD1)
a4 is after 96 (OBD2)
a is JDM
a3 is UK

F22a1 is a 4th gen accord motor, with the 5th gen accords they used b's (i.e. F22b1 & F22b2 [vtec and non vtec])

That is not right. My 93 ex(OBD1) was an a4. It has nothing to do with OBD. It is there to denote a different model within the series.

ight well on H motors it't a1 and a4 for obd1 and obd2

my bad. The accords are confusing. i have an F22b1 and I know that F22b2 is non vtec, then F22a1 is 4th gen (lx at least). so confusing...i'm still learning. I know that a3 is UK though and a is JDM.

just to break it down completly, I'll use the newer F23 since that is the motor I'm most familiar with

F23A4

F is the block. all honda newer honda motors have a letter to designate the block. parts from the same block tend to have a high degree of interchangerability, but it's no guarantee...

23 is the displacement. in this case, 2.3 liters

A4 is the Head and engine management package. the F23 comes in 3 variations, A1, A4, and A5. All 3 share the same bottom end. the A5 has a different, non-VTEC, head than the A1 and A4. the A1 and A4 share the exact same head, but the A1 is a LEV motor, while the A4 has a more restrictive ECU program and different sensors to make it ULEV compliant.

A5 is DX only. A1 and A4 are available in lx and ex models.
