Default Question for those who know about tires!

I'm planning on attending the ITR expo next month. Since this is a road course at Buttonwillow CA. I have narrowed my choices down to two brands of tires.

I want to run my stock rims and my choices were Yokohama A032's or a good Kumho tire. But the A032's don't come in the correct tire width for the stock rim, a little wider I think. But I was told that I can still mount em, but will they rollover?

Whut type of Kumho should I run with the stock rims that's good for road racing?

Thanks for any help!

A032r's will not roll over. I got 205/50-15's and I don't have that problem at all. The tire is tappered up on the edges so there is not chunking or rolling over of any kind!

I absolutely love them on the track. Some complain that it takes them longer to heat up, but I didn't have a problem. After two laps, I was ready to go!

You shouldn't run with r-compound tires unless you have LOTS of track and auto-x experience, and preferably at least a rollbar.

Well I think a roll bar is a little over-the-top.....but safety is always a good thing.

If it's your first track day - stick with your stockers. They will give you lots of audible warning and keep you in the "safe" zone (i.e. no car crack ups)

The A032R and many R compound tires have very very stiff sidewalls - so you should have no concern for rollover (on the rim). 205/50-15 is a perfect size.

Umm, my stock RE010's are pretty much toast and I dont know where to get more without payin' an outrageous price!

And also did I mention that I have an coilover setup so I was thinkin it would be best to upgrade with a stickier tire!

Are the A032r's that bad when not warmed up. I mean I'm willin to try them

Why not go with an AVS Intermediate in 205/50. Tire Rack had them on sale for about $300 per set. Should be a good transitional tire. I also second the above opinion on R Compounds. They are less forgiving and audible than most street tires, which could lead to trouble. Good luck.

If it's your first set of R compound, the 032R is a great choice. They squeal before they completely lose traction on you. They truth is that you may learn a lot more with street tires if you've never been on the track before, but I can bet you anything that you would have a lot more fun with the R compound.

Any tires that are cold would have minimal traction. But the 032R warms up quickly. Just keep turning the wheel on your first lap and warm up your tires before you actually hammer it.

FAST4DR,

Agreed. Get a set of Yokohama AVS Intermediates in the 205/50/15 size. I ran them for 8 months on my R for track events, and loved em! And at only $75 a pop, you cant go wrong.

If you run on R compounds, I think it's time for a roll bar. Definately not over the top. Some organizations are starting to implement rules like no rollbar, no r-compound, and frankly, I don't think it's an entirely bad idea.

If you've never been on a track before, you're going to be working on your own limits, which are WAY below that of the car. You may be driving at 8 tenths of your limits, but 2 tenths of the car's limits. DON'T drive at 10 tenths of your limits, and I don't think you should need a roll bar.

I agree that you should just drive using street tires, no need to use R compound tires until you have a lot of experience.

There are a lot of good tires in 205/50-15 as well as 195/55-15. But if you bought your R to perform, you might want to stick with the RE010 tires. Yes, they're pricey, but why compromise the performance of a $25K sports car by trying to save a few bucks by using cheap tires? $.02

I'm not objecting to the fact that learning with a street tire is more appropriate. But from my experiences, the tires usually give up before the brakes. Hence, better tires such as the sticky 032R would definately enhance the experience of the driver.

Can someone explain why a rollbar is needed to run R compound? I really don't know. Thanks!

R compounds are less forgiving and have a more abrupt breakaway threshold, thus leaving less warning when it is going to break loose, and if you cannot recover quickly, you will crash...and need a rollbar!

I have the A032R, after I used up the 010's.

I would go with the A032R

See......... that's whut I like about this message board,

So many fellow ITR bros lending very, very, very good advice,

Keep it comin because I am like a giant sponge........absorbing all of it
and most of it I will remember!

I most likely won't go with the A032r because of price and my inexperience,
maybe later. I already spun and smacked my car once.............NO MORE!

I'm leaning toward the Yokohama AVS Int. or somethin cheaper, mostly because of price and I just want something sticky that I can push and learn with at the same time!

Once again, thanx fellas and keep it comin'
