cat heat shield

Is the heat shield on the cat important? Damn thing rattles so much, I just want to remove it. Some people say that its not a good Idea.

Will the extra heat melt my carpet? or cause damage to the car?

I just had the same problem. Even my Acura dealer's service department said I could remove it as long as I didn't park in tall grass. As far as affecting the interior, my floor hasn't gotten noticably hotter.
