Default how to heat garage in winter?

what kind of heating sources can be installed in a residential garage that are safe around cars (ie. gasoline)? i worked on the car all through the winter with just the heat coming from the car's motor to keep things above freezing, but there must be a more comfortable solution. any ideas?

detached garage - get a propane/electric heater.. just put it a safe distance from the car and don't leave it on unattended..

attached garage - open the door into the house, and let the heat from the house warm the garage..

either way, some insulation in the garage would definitely help keep it warm, once you get it that way..

You can buy one of those electric heaters that you just plug into any electric outlet.

well, you could always shut the garage door, and leave the car running for heat....but alas....i think that wouldnt work well for some reason

I've got some space heaters at work that would be good. They're radiators, so there's no exposed heating element like most space heaters, and no open flame like a propane heater. They wouldn't heat the whole garage, but it would be enough to heat the area you're working in.

I believe they were purchased at Wal Mart.

I have a built-in furnace for my garage If you can't get heat from the house coming in, I like a space heater, and make sure the garage is well insulated.

ever seen a garage heater?
it's like a mini furnace that you mount on the celing of your garage.
any heating company can sell them, even places like Home Depot or RONA or any hardware store sells them

It's not winter anymore, why worry?

J/K, What about Ceramic space heaters, or other electrical heater systems? I'd personally opt for a Turbo Jet Propane bullet but, you mentioned safe with fuel so...

I've done it 4 ways over the years....... Way back in 1976 I made a waste oil burner out of 3 inch flue pipe tied with wire to a 24 inch box fan..... that one almost burned the garage down. 2nd attempt was a propane fired infrared heater that I converted to natural gas..... got headaches from that one, probably did not get the jetting right and made carbon monoxide. Try 3 was a "torpedo" heater, the type that burns No 2 heating oil, like is used on construction sites. Worked pretty good. No 4 happened when I built this house 17 years ago, I insulated the garage to the same standards as the house, now I open the door to the kitchen and put that old 24 inch fan in the doorway and work in shirtsleeves.

Regards,
BigMoose
