Default tranny bearing question...WHICH ONE

hey which bearing is bad when it makes a "clatter" at idle, whine while driving, and it quiets down when the clutch is pressed in?

isn't it thrust or throwout?

does it screech/scratch/squeel when you let the clutch OUT? if so, then it sounds like the throw-out bearing to me.

well it's not a high pitched sound at all. it sounds like reverse does. and it gets louder as the rpm go up...

SRD said it was the differential making the noise. but my 90 DX did the same thing couple years ago, and it was some sort of bearing. till one day, i parked it, and all the fluid poured out of the tranny onto the driveway. all i know is, this tranny won't last long...

what about PILOT bearing?? where the hell is that on the tranny and what does it do...could it be that one?

the pilot bearing is a smaller bearing that goes on "inside"(middle of flywheel, has a small spot for the pilot bearing) of the flywheel. it lessens the friction between the flywheel and the crankshaft.

sorry to say that everyone who has posted is wrong. it is NOT your throwout bearing. think about it...the throwout bearing is "in use" when you press the clutch in so that is when it will make noise if its bads.

the problem is your mainshaft bearing, which is the bearing inside the clutch housing of the tranny. i brough my tranny to a tranny shop to remove that bearing. it cost me $10 and was the best $10 i ever spent.

i got it removed for $10 and then replaced it myself. i just used a piece of wood and a hammer to get the new one in.

the other problem i had was my differential bearing went bad which caused the ring gear to rub the tranny case. i think this is what made most of the noise, so ham, you might want to check that bearing out as well.

then the symptoms must be wrong b/c the throwout bearing is not even being used when the clutch ISN'T pressed in. it just doesn't make sense, ya know?

yeah that's what the shop told me. they said the noise is most likely the differential bearing loose in there. i just thought it was wierd when i put the clutch in at idle, it would quiet down a bit.

anybody know how much more damage this could cause to anything else in the tranny when i drive it like this? cuase the car still drives nice...

I wouldn't reccomend driving it, but I currently have this problem in my CRX... I have however, been driving quite frequently with the problem as it's not my only car (about twice a week for about 3 months). It has gotten a little louder though, but I am getting another ZC tranny to swap in. I will keep this one I have, and rebuild it for my new motor.

well if the ring gear is rubbing your tranny case, it is filling your tranny with metal shavings. that is NOT good...

i will start off with the ones i know...

1 - mainshaft bearing in clutch housing
1 - countershaft bearing in clutch housing
1 - mainshaft bearing at the end of the mainshaft
1 - countershaft bearing at the end of the countershaft
2 - differential bearings (one on each side of the diff)

so that is 6 right there. i think there might be others.
