Default First sport bike: No way to possibly survive?

From what I have been reading, almost everyone dumps their first bike.

So my question is, with a little bit of restraint, lots of training, good conditions, and a sane guy behind the wheel, is there anyway I can actually make it without killing myself?

I'd probably end up getting a YZF600R, CBR600, or GSXR600...

Basically I am wondering if it can be done with those bikes, or if I absolutely MUST downgrade to something slower/easier to drive for my first bike.

Thanks all.

even if you are super careful, or never ride super hard or do any stunts, the bike will ineveitably hit the ground. you may forget your disc lock in a hurry, or a family member or friend may accidentally knock it over, you may get hit by some stupid cager not paying attention, or you could lend the bike to a friend to ride and they crash it. there are soooooo many ways that a bike can hit the pavement. its like getting a new car. when you first buy it you dont want it to get a single scratch, then the world takes over and owns you. hehe. sorry man

I believe the saying goes, "There are those riders who have crashed, and those who have yet to crash."

Like scrub said, it's inevitable. The best thing you can do is to minimize risks where you can. Like wearing bright colors at night so you'll stand out more. And riding within your abilities. And making sure you've got on the best gear you can afford, not just a t-shirt and shorts.

Best of luck! And keep the rubber side up.

dont worry about it...it is so untrue that anyone who gets a bike is going to crash if that were true no one would ever want to get a bike cause no one wants to crash.........dont let anything like that scare you.

Yes, I believe it's possible. You just have to pay attention to what you are doing and what the cages are doing around you. But like scrubachu said a ding, low speed tip over, or the bike getting knocked over will probably happen. I would still recommend getting a POS bike to learn on. Training wheels, figuratively speaking.

I'm also thinking about getting a bike, not a new one, but maybe a second hand '99-'00 R6 for a good price, slightly used. Scratches are okay as long as the price is right. But yeah, you're gonna drop it regardless. It's like driving a car for years and saying you've never been in a car accident. You could only be so careful and do so much from your part, but sometimes it's not even you, but the other retards on the road not paying attention. Hopefully I could get a bike next year, but I live in a complex with no garage and have my car also, so I don't know how that would work out.

Anyone have this same problem? Do you take turns between your car and your bike? And if you do and have no garage but public parking, do you place the car/bike in some sort of storage?

Just ride within your limits and watch your surroundings.

I AGREE! Control ur emotions and fear also. Take the safety course too. You'll learn a lot from taking it.

Wow thanks everyone for the replies...

I will be in college so this is not going to be a "daily driver" type of thing. It's probably only going to come out on the weekends, and ALWAYS will full leathers on.

I understand it's gonna get scratched up, maybe even dumped pretty hard, but I'm more worried about my personal safety. Am i really guaranteed to take a *hard* fall on my first bike?

PS: I'm 5'10" 150 lbs... am I too small for a 600?

No there are no guarantees.

I made the mistake of using a bike for daily transportation in college (which it sounds like you are not going to do ). Despite years of riding experience I ended up in the hospital for three weeks, now have no spleen and a fake right knee, all because I let my guard down for 2-5 seconds.

Be carefull, ride smart and only when you are up for it, get some training and you will be fine.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Wow I'm sorry to hear that. May I ask what happened? Maybe we all can learn for your mistake...

I hope all is well, and thanks for the advice.

my first bike was an r6...i didnt crash but yeah it did hit the ground...late one night in the foggy and moist bay area...i was getting really cold and waiting for my bike to warm ... as i was about to leave...i tilted my bike over to the right trying to get the kickstand up...when my foot slipped on the curb and the bike went down ...this was a year but but that was the only time...i use my bike daily for college...its so much easier to find parking and i dont have to pay ...just be careful when riding...dont be a showoff

Do NOT listen to this person. You WILL do down.

Having said that, sure some folks will manage to start out on a 600 just fine. Can you? We can't say as none of us know you. Always wear the proper gear and ride safe. Best of luck to you. </TD></TR></TABLE>

bullshit...if everyone who bought a bike went down then no one would by a bike....i ahve friends who have been riding for 15 years and still have not been in a accident.....that is just like saying you buy a car somewhere along the lines you are going to crash. MAN DO NOT BUY A BIKE AND EXSPECT TO CRASH! it does not happen to everyone.

I guess the best way to settle this is:

Does anyone have any REAL proof that SOMEONE has made with with a quick (600cc+) starter bike...WITHOUT crashing? IE: Friend, brother, yourself, ?

So who do I believe?

If you want proof go buy one and find out...more then likly if you do crash and you have a helmet on..your going to walk away from it.

more than likely you will walk away but there's always that high chance that you wont. i kno people that have died on their first bike.

Everytime you go out and ride your taking a risk. the stupider you are on your bike the bigger the risk gets. if you ride around like a puss, and never do tricks, speed, etc.; you can still get hit by dumb drivers, hit a patch of oil, or any other number of things that are out of your control. so are YOU going to go down....maybe but who knows.

and as far as first bikes go, get a used one learn everything you can on it. then sell it off later. cuz IF you do go down you dont wanna kiss that brand new bike goodbye, and parts are expensive.

Yup, its true, one way or another somday everyone will crash.

10seconds, how long have you been riding? are you speaking from experience? any rider, good or bad, will crash someday.

my first bike was a 50cc, it lived through, (crash at the track, and some minor drops here and there), and was sold 2 weeks ago. My brother, first bike was my NSR250, crashed, was in the hospital for 2 days, road rash on the back, broken leg, and much more. my father, have been riding from age of 18 (till 50), he is one of the safest people around (i know that because i go rock climbing with him). he had never crashed on the road before, until 4 year ago, a taxi driver opened the door suddenly, gouging his left leg, and after that, cant walk normally anymore. it all depends, but its soo damn obvious we will all crash.

My first bike was an '88 Yamaha FZ600. I'm currently riding a '95 Honda CBR600F3. So it can definitely be done where you won't drop your bike. But if you drop an older bike, you won't feel as bad.

So far, ever since I started riding (4 years ago), I have not yet dropped a bike, been in an accident, nor been involved in anything bad on my motorcycle (knock on wood). However, my friend dropped his bike twice in only 6 months. So will you drop your bike/get into an accident? Chances are, yes. There is a slight possibility that you will never be in an accident. If so, then you've got a damn good guardian angel. Just always be prepared with a clear mind and good gear. For those of you (like me) who have not crashed, then congrats, but the odds are still against us. Just ride safely within your own abilities.

Happy Easter.
