Apexi VAFC owners . Is this thing COMPLETELY USELESS or what?
I figure since so many of you all own type Rs then someone must have come accross and maybe even owned one of these stupid things known as the VAFC.
I have sat on the dyno now for 2 hours and this things still gives barely any gain in whp, at least that I can see.
I understand that it does not cater for ignition timing but Apexi of Japan insists you can get up to 15+hp at the fly wheel increase of this thing just by adjusting your fuel correction percentage Throughout wide open throttle.
Now HOndas B18c5+ typically use the exhaust sensor at partial thorottle to run at stoichiometric 14.7-14.1 Air Fuel RAtio
So Theoreticaly the only maps that it (VAFC) could help run crisper would be the WOT preset maps
but I aint seen nothin barely 2.8 hp
SO any of you dudes that may have had your Type R running a VAFC please enligten me as to what your experiences were.
Thx

FWIW, I got some nice gains on my B16A by dyno-tuning my V-AFC. It was good for smoothing out the power curve overall.
15hp gains are unrealistic w/ just bolt-ons, but 3-5hp across the band is realistic. Since I tuned my camgears in the same session, I can't be positive about total gains, but there were spikes of 8+ HP in the powerband.
Mostly, it was responsible for giving me a ridiculously flat torque curve. Here:

I don't think mine is useless (or wasn't until I got a hondata
), but it definetly isn't a serious tuning device.

mine was crap too...just sold mine cause it only has limited fuel tuning. my new hondata is much better...ignition tuning, fuel tuning (but its much more precise) and its a hell of a lot cooler to say you have.

Depends on your tuner, your setup, your time on the dyno, etc. etc. I'm going to get mine tuned in a few weeks. Picking up my FPR tomorrow, and my Kenji should be here tomorrow/early next week.

your tone, its all wrong. the vafc is only as smart as the person using it. if you dont have alot of mods, dont expect alot of gains, i see your in phx. where did you dyno it at? i recomend street flight in tempe. guys there are pretty good at tuning with one. my brother does tuning on them also. IM b20bastard if your intrested. hes cheep

it works well in conjunction with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.</TD></TR></TABLE>
This is a very true statement.
With a comptech icebox and already tuned cam gears I was able to gain 8whp with the VAFC and FPR. They informed me that adding hearders and exhaust then retuning, I should gain a lot more. AEBS showed me a dyno chart from a 00 R that went from just I/H/E then added a VAFC and FPR and got 20 whp after tuning. I was up to 176whp with the icebox, vafc,AEM fpr, and aem cam gears.

apparently. They told me that I would get minimal gains, and I'd just waist my time paying for the dyno to squeeze out a couple HP. They said I/H/E FPR and cam gears, along with VAFC work very well together when tuned up. Apparently you can expect WHP in the high 180's at least.
I got 10 whp with just fuel tuning and I had more to get out of it but ran outta dyno time.
Get a new tuner that knows what they are doing.

I got 5-8 from my stock setup and VAFC.
I don't quite understand the need for FPR though... SGT ??
If most of us are seeing gains from leaning the mix... how would an FPR help if it <U>increases</U> the fuel pressure?

becuase the VAFC can onyl do so much , by tricking the ecu , im my thoughts , by adjusting the fuel pressure and thne adjusting the vafc you cna more adjustment.
like wheni had mine it was still a little lean before vtec and was maxed out , if we woulda raised the fuel pressure and thne played with the vafc we prob coulda got ie where we wanted it
correct me if im wrong

You can increase with the FPR, and lean with the VAFC, they work well together when tuned correctly. The VAFC alone, with stock injectors will not increase very much.
When my car was tuned, the VAFC/FPR combo gave me an extra 8 peak whp, and 5-7 hp through the midrange, as well as smoothed out the graph.

High flow CAT
JDM 4-1 header
Toda Camgears
CAI
VAFC
---
From this my peak HP is a result of -5 to -8% through 3k - 8k RPM
Wideband O2 reflects at WOT 13.2 max.
Leaner is better for my engine.

How much extra (Hp) do you think youl get with and new FPR like Aem or whatever.
And whos Kenji</TD></TR></TABLE>
Looking for around 10 peak whp after tuning, probably close to 15whp mid-range.
Kenji is an ECU tuner -- one of the best from what I hear.

not tryin to flame but 176whp with all those mods?? stock itr's lay down around 168 up to 175 stock.. makes me wonder if the vafc is worth the $
