Does the starter turn the flywheel?
Check for spark by removing the spark plug wire, putting a metal screwdriver in the spark plug wire. Put it about 1-2mm away from the radiator support and have someone try starting the car...
If you don't have spark. Trouble shoot the distributor..

Could be ignition system. If you have external coil, try swapping ignitor control modules with a friend, if you have internal coil, try swapping coil.

When you turn the key to the run possition does the CEL come on for 2 seconds and then go out?

Check your fuses. When you turn the key to the run possition the CEL should come on for 2 seconds and then go out.

all fuses checked, i checked everything vital with a voltmeter, everything getting ~12v...when i turn the key to the on position, the CEL stays on and will stay on till i take out the key...no codes on the ecu though...this means either bad main relay or bad ecu...
I had this same exact problem. For me the fix was the distributor. Although, I didn' tneed to change the distributor, but instead just the ignitor module ( its a chip ) inside. I also changed my ignition coil just to be safe, since its been there for almost 100k now.
Anyhow, this came out to be around 350. Good luck and definitely try swapping the coil. Also, my distributor was say 2 years old only, but I hear the ignitor module is a pretty common problem. its a 200 dollar part.
Hope this helps.

Or fuse or wiring or connector. Does your car have an auxillary fuse block on the right side of the under dash fuse box?

yeah, my money is on that... bad ecu/main relay.... maybe even as simple as the ECU fuse. check the underhood fuse box....
it's not the distributor/ignitor... he would hear his fuel pump turn on, and his engine would be getting fuel, just no spark.
it's a problem with the ECU itself... somewhere the ECU has lost connection. or even the ecu has gone bad.
