Spray painting your wheels! Let's get this straight! Experienced people, please help!
Ok........
I don't know anything about different types of spray paint, so please post your input as to what YOU have used or what you know as a fact, works. Also, what tools, methods are best? Let us know yours secrets to get this done in the best way possible.
Please post pictures so we all can see the outcome of your wheel painting experience if possible, please.
I bought some Gloss Black Rust-Oleum paint from Home Depot, and it looked like good quality stuff for wood, metals, etc.
Here's a picture, let me know your feelings on it....

The real question is, what types or brands of spray paint, etc. are best for this?
All info is dearly appreciated.
thanks

i've heard that spray paint rims will eventually make the paint chip or flake off. i spray painted my friends chrome 16"s gunmetal...they actually sell a brand of paint for painting wheels at the automotive store. only colors i saw that it came it was gunmetal, white, and silver. if u plan on paint your wheels black, i've heard that bbq grill paint works amazing.

I've heard good things about the Duplicolor wheel paint. Talk to Patrickgsr94, he's got a quick guide to painting wheels. His wheels look great .A friend and I used it and they turned out awesome. It also helped that they were bead blasted before.
But how does the paint I chose, add up against others such as the Duplicolor Wheel paint? I mean what's the difference here?
Not quite sure about the differences, but the duplicolor paint a lot of people are using are made for painting rims to begin with. I'm not sure about the stuff you got. Just make sure you do a good job with the prep work before and they'll look fine. Check out the links to the threads above.
When ever I paint my wheels, i use Automotive paint that you get at Pep boys or what ever parts houses are around you.
Just mist it on the wheels and take you time. Do not cake the paint on there, it has to have time to dry before the next coat. ( thin coats = faster drying time and better results.)
You can keep from getting the tires painted by putting index cars around the edge of the wheel.
Make sure the wheel is clean, if it is a slick surfaced wheel then you need to scuff it up just a little, so that the paint will stick.
Alot of people on the board use primers before the apply the paint, this is a good tool to keep the paint on the wheel, plus it actually makes the paint mor true to the color on the can.
Hope that helps ya out, Hey guys did I miss anything?

Alot of the wood, and etc.. Laquers are not made for wheels. Automotive Laquers are better because they are made to paint cars, and sheet metal, not wood and other craft like things that Rustoleum is.
What ever you do, do not get acrylic paint it is too thick and makes it look fake when it drys, Always use automotive laquers. You may get some good results with what you have but I would test it and see.

sorry no pics but this is what i did.
If you have a powder coated rim its best to strip it off using REALLY strong stripper...i used Aircraft paint remover and a pressure washer.
Then clean it all up with some degreaser...
and if you want you can light sand but i didnt and it worked just fine.....then get some paint (i used the duplicolor gunmetal rim coating, an dit worked GREAT!!!)
do light coats and keep going till its all evenly caoted and one color....they also sell duplicolor clear coat but i didnt spray any on my wheels.....if you read the can that duplicolor is suppose be good against heat and brakedust so that is a + right there

Well I just did my friends rims yesterday using dupicolor rim paint and i most say they look freaking nice. All I did was simple green the rims and then let them dry for a but then stuck index cards between the tir and rim and then sprayed a light coat of bulldog adhesive promoter then I sprayed 5 light costs of the gunmetal rim paint then let it dry for a hour and then 3 light coats of clear coat rims paint... Waited a couple hours and they were good to go... We started at 11am and were done by 2pm

You could do it without it, but it would be hard as hell.
