Visual difference between a JDM 96 spec ITR motor and 98 spec??
I need to look at a motor for a friend, and I need to know the easiest way to tell these two motors apart.
I know a few things already..
1. Date on head
2. Carbon feux spark plug cover
What about a block number? Is there a special designation for stuff after 98?
Spanks kids

sometimes the spark plug cover doesn't come with it, and even so.. it can be put onto a 95.5-97 spec to fool you.
the header like mentioned above, but that too can be swapped out.
i believe the block number can tell the year of it, i'd email a&j or PM AJR PWR

A JDM '96 spec ITR motor has a "95" stamp. The motor is made in the previous year to the car model year. I have a JDM '96 spec ITR motor and it says "95" near where the headers meet up to the head.

Internally there is no difference. But for peice of mind, date stamping on the head is the only surefire way of distinguishing.
look for the date stamp on the head but an early say 1-96 would be a 96 motor, and a late 8-96 would be a 97.
on the block look for a date stamp, i belive it would say 95... , you add one year for every dot there is, so a 95... would be a 98

Cams are slightly different. Also, someone mentioned that 98 spec had 290 cc injectors. I'm not sure if there is any truth to that.
