So there was this knocking/loud ticing noise coming from my B16 motor. It's a 1st gen B16 in my 88 CRX. The first day it made that noise and then it went away when the car was warmed up. The next day the noise wouldn't go away. The day after, the noise was still there and everytime I decelerated or just stepped on the brake, the idle would shoot down and the car would shut off. It must have turned off like 15 times that day.

So my question is, what do you guys think it is? A friend of mine said it sounded like the lifters, another thinks it's the rods. The head is now off, there is no play on the pistons when it is turned manually. The lifters feel ok, what else can it be? Before the head was off, the car still ran. Help me guys, thanks.

Really? It was like a "tack tack tack", like 3 per second but how would an exhaust leak cause that? Thanks for your replies though...

 

somtimes injectors make clicking noises. but probley not that loud. I would get a valve adjustment anyway. its $40 and cant hurt anything. I also had the same problem and took it to honda to find out what was going on. They told me the cam gear bolt ( bolt the holds the cam grear on) the cam was loose and just wobbleing around making the big tikking, clanking sound under the hood. try and put your ear to your motor and see kinda where is comming from.

 

Well my mechanic was the one that suggested that it was the lifters, that's why I asked. I don't know what to do now. The lifters are like $25 at Honda, so for all 8 it will be $200....
