Default Loss of horse when ITR intake manifold was added on???

A friend of mine has a 1.7 GSR motor in his CRX and he decided to use a ITR intake manifold on his motor. We had the car dynoed before the Type R manifold was on to see where we were at. Then we had the Type R manifold installed and dynoed it again to see some improvements, but it seems the Type R manifold made his motor lose 5 horses. We couldn't see how? His setup is just a US spec ITR intake cam, Skunk2 cam gears, and now the ITR intake manifold. What did we do wrong and what can we do gain back or increase the power?

did you make the wiring changes?

the 1.7 uses dual butterfly, the type R doesnt,

your probably going to need a itr ecu to make full power from that mod, i happen to have one for 200

maybe you can use a Vafc. You're getting more air without adding more fuel?

The B17 doesn't use the butterflys, only the B18C1's do. Since you have cam gears, adjust them to optimize the cam timing. If anything, you may lose a few horsepower in the low to midrange rpms, but gain on the top end with the ITR manifold. Also, what throttle body are you using?

FWIW I read a book that was in Barnes and Nobles about Hondas. I think it was named "Honda tuning guide" or something like that. In the book he dynos his car with every additional mod that he has put on. He also lost power with the ITR intake manifold. It was his recommendation to wait to add the ITR manifold until the end of engine modifications.

what throttle body and intake do you have? it wont do any good to add the intake manifold without getting a throttle body and intake thats just as big in diameter.

I used the 1.7 GSR throttle body and I got an aftermarket intake system (no name brand).

When I added the ITR intake manifold, I also added a JG throttle body, and ITR cams.

When I did this, my DYNO HP went down by 18HP at the wheels.

We tuned the fuel and timing settings using a Hypertech Shogun tuner, and with my stock B16a cam gears were able to bring it back up from crappiness to 151 at the wheels, a gain of 33 for the day, 12 over stock with exhaust.

The engine maxed out the stock 1st gen injectors at 151, though. It probably could have used more fuel for the mods.

I'm not sure what the peak duty cycle is for the b16a1 injectors. FWIW, I know that I was able to make 160 at the wheels with stock injectors.

I was pushing my car to nearly 9k rpm on the stock valvetrain... we were pushing it til it ticked, the car never fell off up top...

We wanted to throw more rev's at it, but stoopid Honda Stock valvesprings

Any other suggestions? My friend really doesn't want to spend anymore money at the dyno.

Get a good adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and turn up the fuel pressure 5 PSI, if that helps, turn it up 5 more, if that seems to help, turn it up 5 more. Keep doing that til it feels like it slows down, and back off 5 PSI.

It's butt dyno work, but it helps sometimes.
