Default backfiring still....do i need a cat?

Ok my car has been backfiring for a while now following high revs. At first i thought it was because i had 2.25" exhaust, gutted cat, straight back to a big muffler coming out passenger side. Well i just got a new axle back exhaust system installed, and the backfiring is still there. Also, i do have a code 23... NOw, do you think the backfiring is caused by the cat being hollowed, or do u think its just running a little rich or something. I am gonna install the new sensor next wkend, so i guess i will find out soon enough, but just wondering what you guys thought.......?

Thanks

do you run premium gas? code 23 is a knock sensor, could be the root of your problems there...

YOu dont have any codes?? I know this problem is really bothering me, i thought it was my exhaust so i changed it.... I guess i could deal with it, but if its a problem, that could be bad for my motor, i would like to get it fixed.

Code 23 will only show when the knock sensor is not hooked up/not hooked up correctly. It will NOT show a code when it senses knock.
A little popping with a gutted cat is normal.

but the backfiring sounds comes from the front of my car, and the plugs are new and also the wires. I think it might be my dizzy.

my plugs are fine, the ks is not hooked up, thats why i am getting that code, and i konw that it makes the car run rich and / or retards the timing, but the popping comes from my exhaust

does anybody know if junkyards will sell used cats? or is there laws against this....because i called my favorite one this morning and they said THEY dont sell them
