Default what if vtec is sleepy?

what happens when vtec refuses to kick in because of oil pressure, temp, or any other factors? will my car be limited to a certain rpm range?

I'm asking because I've never once heard vtec on my R. I rev up to 7k or so, but i heard no transition. I have my resonator off so my cars pretty loud, vtec should noticeable for me, but its not.

I'm just afraid, that maybe for some crazy reason im revving that high on my lower cams. is that even possible?

i havent really had time to go to the dealer. I was just curious about how the car reacts when vtec is off, say because of cold temps or low oil pressure? can it even rev to 7k in that state?

I think you need to make time and go to the dealer. Or walk outside and check your oil.

Boba- who hasnt been on HT in 4 days.

someone else was having this problem. He couldnt hear VTEC engaging and his car dyno'd like 50hp at the wheels. VTEC wil not engage when your car is cold, so DO NOT rev it up. Until my car is fully warmed up I don't take it past 4k. Do what the 1400-post boys are telling you and get to the dealer, quick.

Um, why are you revving to only 7k? You should either being warm enough to go all to 8500 or keep it below 4k.

You need to start from a standstill and mash it, WOT. If you dont feel a slight pick-up at about 6k, something is wrong.

VTEC is a relatively subtle thrust at 5700rpm. However compared to other cars it is a huge leap, cause most cars' revs slow down on the last 3000 revs.

I think when he says reving here he means parked in his driveway and pressing down on the thottle. Just a guess...

I know Boba and TypeRmsm would disagree, but I say take it to the dealer (j/k of course guys)

ok so when im testing for vtec, its usually in this park near my house. It's one of those big parks like golden gate park in sf. theres a reasonably straight section, and i usually mash the throttle there. I get up to 4th shifting at around 7,000 in each gear. I only go up to 7k cuz i never heard the engagement so i didnt want to risk any damage by going any higher. Ill keep the temp in mind next time i look for my vtec again. I deifnitely do feel a pull at higher rpms though. Thanks for the input guys, I'll definitely make time to goto the dealer this weekend.

Yeah when i got my ITR I was itching to hear some VTEC...i thought it was going to be like "vroooooooEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" but its more gradual, you sorta have to listen, and also feel for it...dont worry about shifting at 7...u still ahve 1,400 rpms (or more hehe) to go ...and keep the pedal mashed from the beginning, you'll feel the VTEC kick in right around 7,000 rpms and higher..

Take off your air cleaner lid, warm your car up, be in second gear cruising about 3000rpms, then MASH your throttle. You *will* notice a loud audible difference at ~6000 rpms. If you don't notice it, take your car back to the dealer ASAP.

I dont know about you guys but when I first hit VTEC it was definitely noticeable and had a big kick. It was like mmmmBAAAAAAAA and I lifted cause I was so scared. I had already seen mad videos and listened to clips but they still didnt prepare me. If you are not feeling that, either your last car was an S2000 or your Teg is defective.

yeah, I know for sure when the VTEC Kicks in..
a sudden 'BWAAAAA' sound comes out so loud and the car pulls hard..
when I first got my R, I tried to 7K, temp is cool, no VTEC of course..
make sure the Temp gauge go to 1 strip below the middle.. go 1st gear to about 6K, you can tell it's there if it is.
if not? whoa.. you probably didn't realize that someone swapped your B18C5 with an LS engine.. (go check it out asap!!)

Give it some coffee?

Seriously though, if you want to hear it do exactly what was mentioned above. Take the top off your Air filter housing. I never heard vtec that much when MY itr was stock. Now with the AEM(and a BIG-a$$ filter), you can definetely hear it.

If you are an experienced technician please read on:

1. If you have a "Power Probe"(a test light that reads neg and pos using a 12 volt source). Using this will allow you to switch on and off 12 volts to the VTEC solenoid.

2. With the engine on rev the engine above 3000 RPM (to raise oil pressure)

3. At the same time back probe the VTEC solenoid connector (while the connector is still connected to the solenoid) with the test light"Power Probe" apply 12 volts to the solenoid.

4. You will hear the engine change in sound significantly and will occur once you have applied the 12 power source

5. If you do not hear the VTEC change over you have a mechanical problem.

6. If you do hear the VTEC change over you have an electrical problem.
