burning 1 qt of oil every 1000 miles....
im looking into buying a used ITR. He says it burning about 1 qt of oil every 1000 miles. Ill be getting toda c's for it right away, so i can change the headgasket when i take the head off sence i have to do that anyways. but the only other main source of an oil leak i guess would be a burnt piston ring. Will a compression test show me anything as far as that goes?
Basically, because i can change a gasket myself, i cant fix a burnt ring though.
any other suggestions as to how i might try to straight it out or figure out exactly what might be causeing the problem before i bought it?

If I were you I'd walk away, but at least the guys honest i guess. Cant u find something thats in better condition though ? 1 qt every 1000 seems a little excessive.
Or is it really that hard to find a used type r ????
Im looking for one myself as a weekend/ track car too.

Yeah.. Mine has burned 1 qt every 1000 miles since I switched back to Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5w 30. I'll probably go back to 10w30. It lasts a little bit longer.

My car consumed more than that, and it was properly broken-in, never abused, didn't smoke, and ran quite strong. As far as I'm concerned, 1 quart of 5W30 per 1000 miles is nothing to be concerned about on an ITR.
my car burns more oil than that when i use mobil 1 5w-30...and i baby it (i hit vtec once every two days only)
i have switched to 10w-30 mobil 1 and the burning seems less these days
if you are getting a good deal on it, i say go for it...if you get spec c's, you will get new pistons (and piston rings) in the future anyway

I used to have this problem and I went back to Castrol GTX from Mobil One Synthetic and put some ring sealer in it at the last oil change and it has hardly burned any oil in 3 months.
1 qt every 1k miles is pretty good as far as I am concerned. A good bore and hone job along with insuring the cylinders are perfectly straight is a good precaution. See how much oil you burn when you drive like a normal person.
